DANVILLE, Ky. – Kayla Riggs and Jenna Johnston both finished inside the top-10 in the 800 meters combining for five team points to help lead the Golden Eagles to a 8th place finish at the Centre Twilight. Riggs finished fifth beating her own school record with a time of 2:19.70, while Johnston placed eighth clocking 2:25.48.
Coach Sowder commented on Kayla and Jenna’s performances, “I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was to see both Kayla and Jenna have great performances. All week long the signs were there for them to have a big performance.” Sowder continued, “Kayla’s best of 2:21.94 came when she went out and pressed harder every 200 meters, and last night was no different. She’s starting to really get in a groove and making small adjustments to improve her times. Jenna had a great cross season, but injury kept her from running for almost two months. It’s amazing that she has been able to go from 2:32 to 2:25 in seven weeks, and a testament to Jenna’s stubbornness and will to achieve her goals.”
Ashley Chase and Kelsey Hamilton had solid sprint performances. In the 100 meter dash, Chase finished 17th (13.59) and Hamilton placed 18th (13.71). In the 200 meters, Chase placed 14th (28.40) and J’Anna Jones finished 23rd (30.24). Jones also competed in the 400 meters finishing sixth clocking 1:09.57. Hamilton also earned ninth in the 100 meter hurdles (19.16).
Senior Kayla continued her solid senior campaign taking fourth in the 5000 meter run crossing the finish line in 19:44.73.
Sophomore thrower Katie Suiters earned a trio of top-five finishes. Suiters finish fourth in the shot put (11.49 meters) and javelin throw (28.05 meters), and fifth in discus (32.71 meters).
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, April 23 at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, Ky.
