The KTCCCA Middle School State Track & Field Championships took place on June 4 at the University of Louisville. Rockcastle County took home the team title with 72 points. Louisville’s North Oldham placed second (64 points) while Oldham County rounded out the top five (48 points).

One of the day’s most interesting stories was that of Farnsley Middle’s 4×200 meter relay team. The squad, made up of Najuae Jackson, Iaunia Pointer, Nisha Morgan, and Justice Miller, finished second behind E.J. Hayes with their best time of the season, 1:53.34.

“It feels good,” said Jackson on the team’s finish, her teammates all smiles as they nodded in agreement, “because in the beginning, we did okay, but still we got better as we progressed in more track [meets].”

They all testified that head coach Ronnie Bowman pushing them throughout the season led to their gradual improvement. “Hard work. Dedication. Belief.” That’s what the clan said Bowman preached.

“It makes me feel good,” said Bowman on his team’s accomplishment. As Farnsley head coach for the past six years, Bowman also doted on the assistance he has received from coach Elizabeth Disney. The work that the duo has put in is what Bowman hopes will be fruitful in the lives of the girls later on in life.

“It allows them to elevate themselves,” he added. “But it’s not just about teaching them about track. It’s about teaching them life, that you set a goal and you work hard to achieve that goal.”

Bowman’s coaching style encompasses encouraging, motivating, and pushing the girls to the next level. He is adamant, however, that he makes sure the girls have a “voice”. He wants to hear what races they’re comfortable competing in and which legs of the race they want to run.

On the experience of having his girls qualify for the state meet, Bowman was proud.

“As an experience, as a coach, it just lets the kids know that all the hard work they put in throughout the year, throughout the season, that this is what you’ve been working hard for – is this right here.”

This was the first year that Miller and Pointer participated on Farnsley’s track and field team; it’s the second year for Jackson and Morgan. All four girls also competed on the 4×100 meter relay team. They placed fifth with a time of 54.34.

Also noteworthy from the state meet, Louisville’s St. Edward set a new middle school state meet record in the 4×800 meter relay with a 10:19.96. The previous record was 10:21.80, set by Campbell County. Sarah Wilkinson is a member of that St. Edward team. She also took home the title in the 3200m run (11:57.77).

The other first-place finishes from Louisville schools were Oldham County’s 4x400m relay, with a time of 4:25.48, and Oldham County’s pole vault athlete, Katie Wright, with a distance of 9-00.00.

Below are the top five finishers of each event from the meet…
