Every week, the Louisville Women’s Sports Network highlights a local woman by asking her six questions about her health and fitness routine. This week’s guest is Shannon Kessler. If there is a woman you’d like us to feature, email suggestions to email@example.com.
My favorite job title is Mom! I am a mother of two little girls, Ruby Jane (5) and Eleanor (3). I love watching them grow up and explore their space in this world.
I love to practice yoga! When my week allows, I squeeze in three heated yoga classes. I find it’s the perfect balance between a great workout and mentally checking back in. I feel like I am at my best when I am on my mat. I also love the burn I get from Pure Barre. Recently, I added in the platform class at Pure Barre and b. bounce at B. You Fitness. Both are a ton of fun and really intense.
Any time I can get out on the water and paddle board, I will; bonus if I can incorporate yoga on my paddle board!
Sports have been a part of my life since I was five years old. I took my first gymnastics class at the YMCA and was hooked. Years later, I competed competitively in gymnastics, cheerleading and soccer. I attribute much of my self-discipline to the hours I spent in a gym. I learned how to push thru pain, to never give up, that your best is what your team asks of you, and if you want to learn to do something, then you have to put in the time.
My passion for cheerleading turned into coaching competitive cheerleading (seven years). I loved watching athletes become stronger, more confident people. When you give a child the confidence to believe in their ability, you open a world of possibility.
I am also the founder and co-owner of Primp Style Lounge, Louisville’s premier blowout bar. We specialize in blowouts, professional makeup application, and wardrobe consulting. Creating a brand from the ground up required a lot of market research and determination. Louisville is a great city to own a small business. Our community has been very supportive.
Six Questions About Your Fitness & Health
1)What is your weekly training/exercise routine?
I practice yoga 2-3 days a week. I go to Pure Barre 1-2 times a week and I sprinkle in a Pure Barre platform class or a B.You b. bounce class.
2) How do you prepare for a workout?
I prefer to get my workouts done early, some mornings as early as 6 a.m. I drink lots of coconut water the night before and at least 30 minutes before any workout.
3) What do you eat, drink or do for quick energy?
I am obsessed with the Arbonne Fizz sticks! It contains antioxidants and a blend of green tea combined with B vitamins. It’s a great energy booster! I am not a big coffee drinker, so a vitamin-packed punch is right up my alley.
4) What are you daily nutritional meal plan when training?
I am a pretty consistent clean eater. I eat a ton of chicken and salmon. I also eat a lot of kale! I put it in my smoothies. I eat kale chips and I will take down a kale salad.
I like to snack on almonds and pumpkin seeds. I can pretty much eat my weight in carrots and hummus. Popcorn popped on the stove is my go-to nighttime snack. I pop it in jalapeno grapeseed oil for a little kick.
6) What are your health and fitness goals?
I want to show my girls that living a healthy lifestyle is not about restricting yourself. It’s about being active and making good decisions. As for my fitness goals, I love trying new sports. I have always been intrigued by triathlons. That is one of my bucket list items; I just don’t love running anymore. My husband just finished his fourth marathon. I am so inspired by him. He may just be the one to push me out the door!
