Cottrell & Worrell Advance: Olympic Swimming Trials Update

Out of the 134 swimmers competing for a spot on the U.S. National Team, University of Louisville senior Kelsi Worrell finished 1st in the 100-meter butterfly preliminaries on June 26 in 56.84 seconds – ahead of Olympian Dana Vollmer’s 57.50 (2nd place).

Louisville sophomore Mallory Comeford finished 37th with a time of 1:00.30. Sacred Heart Academy class of 2016/University of Kentucky freshman Asia Seidt placed 51st in the event (1:00.73). North Oldham class of 2016/Louisville freshman Grace Oglesby finished 55th in 1:00.82. Lastly, Louisville junior Hannah Magnuson finished 86th with 1:01.33.

Advancing to the semifinals, Vollmer pulled ahead of Worrell with a 1st place finish in 56.90; Worrell in 57.12. The two will square off in the finals at 8 p.m. EDT on June 27.

Also on June 26 was the 400 individual medley. Sacred Heart class of 2017’s Brooke Forde finished 15th with a time of 4:46.59. Louisville junior Marah Pugh placed 38th (4:52.88). Cardinal teammate and sophomore Rachael Bradford-Feldman finished 41st in 4:53.33. Leah Stevens, Sacred Heart class of 2015/Stanford sophomore, placed 66th with a time of 4:56.19.

None advanced to the semifinals.

The 100-meter backstroke preliminaries and semifinals were held on June 27. In the preliminary heats, Seidt’s time placed her in 27th with a 1:01.89. That time was 0.57 seconds from advancing her to the semifinals. In 101st was Louisville senior Kenzie Buss with 1:03.85. In 103rd was Tonner Debeer, Sacred Heart class of 2018, with 1:03.91.

None advanced to the semifinals.

Also on June 27 were the preliminaries and semifinals for the 100-meter breaststroke and 400-meter freestyle. In the breaststroke, Louisville senior Andrea Cottrell finished 5th with a 1:07.21 and will advance to the semifinals at 8:25 p.m. EDT on June 28. Sacred Heart class of 2016/University of Arizona freshman Kennedy Lohman placed 39th in 1:10.08. In the freestyle, Sacred Heart class of 2015/Stanford University sophomore Leah Stevens placed 49th in 4:17.39.
