EAST PEORIA, Ill.—Two Bellarmine University softball players were recognized with All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors tonight at the league’s annual softball awards reception on the eve the 2017 GLVC Softball Championship Tournament. Senior Rachel Fox was named to All-GLVC second team as an outfielder, and freshman Sabrina Fussenegger picked up third team accolades as a pitcher.
Fox came on strong during the GLVC portion of the Bellarmine schedule. The left-handed Fox, who patrolled left field for the Knights, hit at a .385 clip during conference play with a .513 slugging percentage. In the field, she played error-free and added two outfield assists.
Overall, Fox hit .304 during the regular season with three triples.Fussenegger also got stronger during the GLVC season. In 28 conference games this season, the freshman right hander made 27 appearances with a 12-7 record and a 2.81 earned run average. She threw 149 innings and issued just 19 walks. For the season, Fussenegger made 46 appearances in the circle with 219 innings pitched and an ERA of 3.20.
The league also recognized 16 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees, with Fussenegger earning the distinction for Bellarmine. The student-athletes chosen for the honor are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced later this month.
