With the 2016-17 athletic year finished, LWSN wants to take a look at back at our district and regional champions from this past school year. For the next four week, we will take a look back at these winners three days a week until all the sports have been recognized. Today, we look at field hockey.
Manual finished the season as the regional champion and state runner-up. The Crimsons defeated Presentation 9-1 in the regional title game
The Crimsons then defeated Mercy (3-1) in the quarterfinals of the state tournament and Christian Academy (1-0) in the semifinals. The Crimsons lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Assumption in overtime in the state finals.
Presentation lost to Sacred Heart 4-0 in the state quarterfinals.
Sacred Heart won the Second Region title. The Valkyries defeated Seneca 10-0 in the opening round and Mercy 1-0 in the regional championship. SHA defeated Presentation 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament before losing to Assumption 1-0 in overtime in the state semifinals.
Mercy advanced to the state tournament by defeating Eastern 4-1 in the opening before losing to SHA. The Jaguars season ended with a 3-0 loss to Manual.
Assumption’s field hockey team won the Third Region title and went onto win their second state title in three years by defeating Manual 1-0 in overtime.
Atherton defeated Male in the regional semifinals before losing to Assumption 4-0 in the regional title and saw their season end with a 1-0 loss to Christian Academy in the first round of the state tournament.
Christian Academy won the regional title by defeating North Oldham 9-0 in the opening round and then cruised past Kentucky Country Day 5-0 in the finals. The Centurions then defeated Atherton 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament before falling 1-0 to Manual in the state semifinals.
Kentucky Country Day advanced to the state tournament by defeating Ballard 1-0 in the opening round of regionals and lost to CAL in the finals. The Bearcats lost 3-1 to Assumption in the state tournament quarterfinals.
