JCTMS aiming to 4-peat

Michael G. Moore, LWSN Guest Blogger and JCTMS girls head basketball coach gives us an inside look at this year’s basketball team.

Going into the new season, the Jefferson County Traditional Middle School (JCTMS) girls basketball team is on a 52 JCPS game winning streak, and coming off a 3-peat as City Champs. JCTMS went 15-0 during the 2014-15 season, 19-0 in 2015-16, and 18-0 in 2016-17.

The program has been fortunate with the amount of talent that has come through JCTMS.   With many of the high school squads in Louisville, you will notice many familiar faces that once wore the JCTMS girls’ basketball jersey.

Many of the players have gone on to play at the high school level, at schools like Male, Butler, Sacred Heart, Manual, and Mercy.  It is great to see former players visit the school or attend JCTMS games and talk to the current team.  Some take the time to discuss their experiences with the players on how they can achieve their goal of going on to the next level.

This year’s team will chase a fourth straight JR LIT City Championship.  The longest city championship streak is held by Crosby Middle School.  They won five straight from 2008-2012 with Coach Jerry Durbin.  Johnson earned back to back titles in 2013-2014 with Coach Derrick Torrens.  JCTMS, Crosby and Johnson have a tradition of talented players, and have many former players now excelling in high school and college.

This will be my first season coaching without Coach Stacy Biggers-Smith.  She retired from coaching after our championship run last season.  She is now enjoying retirement, but I would like to thank her for all of the exciting years.  She was dedicated to coaching kids at the elementary level, JCTMS and AAU, she was a phenomenal role model for the kids.  During our eight years coaching together, we had a great run at JCTMS and in AAU. We were a terrific coaching tandem with incredible chemistry on the sidelines.  All her former players remember her motto: “Grab it and put it in your pocket, so when you need it, you have it.

Entering the 2017-2018 season, the JCTMS team looks to carry on their winning tradition.  We set our team goals at the first practice of every season.  Our goals this year include the same list as the previous year: winning the South District Championship, winning the JR LIT City Championship, and ending the season undefeated!  Additionally, our goal is to come together as a team, build trust and unity among one another, as well as develop individual skills.

This will help each player find a role in which they can contribute in their own way to help accomplish our team goals.  This will be key to a successful season.  We will have to gel and play as a team.  Having the ability to show we can play with great confidence, discipline, attitude, effort, energy, toughness and competitive spirit will benefit us greatly.  We will have to emphasize and execute on the small things like timely scoring, great rebounding and tenacious defense.
