Four Knights women receive All-GLVC soccer accolades

INDIANAPOLIS — Four Bellarmine University women’s soccer players received All-Great Lakes Valley Conference accolades, the league unveiled on Thursday night.

Senior goalkeeper Taylor Smith earned first-team status, senior defender Kelsey Lober was recognized on the second team and junior defender Polly Marino and freshman midfielder Samantha Ferry were distinguished on the third team.

“We are very excited about all of our All-GLVC recipients,” Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. “We’ve had a good year, but we don’t have a lot of stats so sometimes you wonder how things will shake out.”

Smith garnered first-team All-GLVC notice for the second time after also being lauded in 2015. The Louisville native has set the single-season program record for shutouts with 11. The Christian Academy of Louisville product carries a 0.34 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage while playing every minute in goal for the Knights this season.

Lober, a center back, has helped spearhead a defense that has yielded a mere six goals in 16 matches. Among non-goalkeepers, the Marion, Illinois, native is leading Bellarmine in minutes played with 1,581 and has started every contest. She hasn’t exited a game since September.

Marino, another integral member of the defense, has made 14 starts and is approaching 1,000 minutes of action this season. The Louisville native and product of Assumption provided one of the team’s most inspired moments of the year when she fought off two Truman State defenders in the box and scored with 35 seconds left in a 1-0 victory.

Ferry leads Bellarmine in scoring with four goals. The first was the most dramatic, as the native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, delivered the “golden goal” in a 2-1 double-overtime victory over then-No. 2 Grand Valley State in the season opener.

“We’ve been very good defensively. It’s great to see Taylor, Kelsey and Polly get rewarded for their work,” Tinius said. “Taylor and Kelsey are leaders back there, and Polly adds in some attacking presence as well. Sam Ferry came out of the gate very hot and had one of the more impactful seasons of the freshmen across the league, so we are happy for her.”

Quincy reaped three of the four individual awards. Mackenzie Rief was named Offensive Player of the Year, Allison Birke was voted Defensive Player of the Year and Dave Musso was selected Coach of the Year. Maryville’s Alex Johnson reaped Freshman of the Year notice.

Bellarmine earned the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award.

“We are also very honored to receive the Sportsmanship Award,” Tinius said. “We have a lot of great kids beyond being just soccer players. We try to represent Bellarmine in a positive manner. We want to compete while still being respectful of our opponents, so it’s good to see that recognized.”
