We began the week at the legendary Old Male HS Gym! Our opening game Monday was against Highlands-Latin. The game began very slow with both team playing a tad nervous which can be expected being a tournament and playing in this legendary gym.
After a few moments the Lady Lions took off with some very tough defense leading to turnovers and the solid play of one of our varsity leaders in Emma Burton. Emma seemed to have decided that she was going to take over this game with her inside play and poured in six of the teams eight points in the first quarter. When the buzzer sounded at the half after some solid plays by Reagan DeMusey, LFCA had worked our way to an 17-8 halftime lead.
We picked up where we left off in the second half with the team playing very hard. The fourth quarter saw another one of our varsity leaders Kendall Chapman scoring five of her seven points to go along with Burton’s game high of 12 points to put this game away as the Lady Lions won 37-15 to move on to the Championship game Wednesday night!
It’s championship game night and we are taking on the Lady Wyverns of St Francis. This was a back and forth game. Both sides played as hard as any coach could have asked for. We started off very well in the first quarter gaining an eight point early advantage with some solid shots by Kaiden James and Emma Burton.
We play a very physical defense and tonight it caught up with us. Foul trouble hit us very early with our dynamic PG picking up her third foul into the first period. Kaiden James runs this team like clockwork so when it was time to bring in a sub for her it became a game to just survive till the second half.
The game turned into a foul-fest by both teams who were playing hard. Allison Spieker began to do what she does best and that’s light it up from the outside with three of her three-point field goals. Allison finished the game with a team high 12 points. The game was within reach with all the free throws that we had. We just failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities time after time after time.
We finished the game shooting 6 pf 28 from the line and lost the championship by a score of 38-35! A solid effort by all but as this game showed, you have to hit the free throws! Allison’s great games were rewarded by being chosen on the All-Tournament team!
I have to add what a solid effort by the Lady Wyverns of St Francis. Those girls took a pounding physically and kept going. This teams gym was damaged by a tornado and they have played every game on an opponents home gym all year and should be commended on gritting it out like they have. I congratulate them on their 2017 Holiday Tournament Championship!
The LFCA Lady Lions now enter their Christmas break with a record of 10-4! We will resume practicing and games on Jan. 2nd.
On behalf of the players/Coaching Staff and parents of Little Flock Christian Academy, we would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
