Crimsons season ends with loss to Boyd County

Highlands Heights, Ky. – Manual’s basketball team saw their fantastic run end with a 71-53 loss to Boyd County in a St. Elizabeth Healthcare/KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game at Northern Kentucky University’s BB&T Arena Friday night.

Boyd County raced out a 36-19 lead in the first half and would lead by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter.

The Lions were unconscious from three-point and shot 9 of 16 in the first-half and 12 of 22 (54.5 percent) for the game.

Boyd made 20 of 36 (55.6 percent) overall and 19 of 26 (73.1 percent) from the charity stripe.

Savannah Wheeler led the Lions with 29 points and hit 4 of 8 from three-point land. Hailey Paynter added 14 points while Charity Shears finished with 13 points and Payton Shears had 12 points and nine rebounds. ‘

Manual only made 21 of 60 (35 percent) from the field including 7 of 20 (35 percent) from three-point land and 4 of 13 (30.8 percent) from the free-throw line.

Nila Blackford led the Crimsons with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Jaela Johnson added 12 points and five assists and Tyonne Howard also had 12 points and five assists.

The Lions will play Mercy in the state semifinals Saturday at 8 p.m.
