Most dominant athletic programs in Louisville

The 2017-18 school-year may have ended a few weeks ago, but Louisville Women’s Sports Managing Editor Conor Revell wants to take a glance back and honor the most dominant female sports programs in the Louisville area over the past five years.

We only looked at sports that have been sanctioned by the KHSAA all four years and is played across the state eliminating field hockey, lacrosse, bass fishing, and bowling.

Best of the Rest (no order)

Butler Basketball

The Bearettes won three Sixth Region titles in 2014, 2016, and 2017 and won state championships in 2014 and 16.

Male Softball

Won five straight Seventh Region championships from 2012-17, saw their run end this year despite being ranked in the top five most of the year.

Mercy Softball

The Jaguars won four straight regional titles from 2012-15 including a state title in 2012 and then won their fifth regional championship in six years in 2017.

Mercy Volleyball

The Jaguars have won 19 straight Sixth Region championship and won a state title in 2014 and was named national champs.

Sacred Heart Soccer

The Valkyries have won five straight Seventh Region championships and 11 in the past 12 years. Assumption won the region in  2012.

The Top Five

  1. Manual Cross Country

The Lady Crimsons won their second straight Class 3-A state title and finished the year ranked 19th in the country. It’s hard to ignore a program that has repeat as state champs.

  1. Male Track and Field

The Lady Bulldogs won their third straight Class 3-A state title this past spring in convincing fashion. There isn’t another team in the state that can compete with them and for now they’re one of the top programs until they get unseated.

  1. Sacred Heart Golf

The Valkyries have dominated the scene over the past decade having six state titles in the past seven years including two consecutive. Last year they were so dominant winning both the individual and team state championship.

  1. Sacred Heart Swimming

The Valkyries have produced top swimmers that are nationally known for decades, but has became increasingly dominant over the past 10 years having won six straight, eight in the past nine years, and 27 in the last 40 years, and 29 overall.

  1. Assumption Volleyball

No team has been as dominant as the Rockets volleyball teams have been over the past two and a half decades. Assumption has won 20 state championships in the past 25 years and has also competed for national titles during that time span. It has been an incredible run that doesn’t appear to be losing any steam anytime soon despite Mercy and Sacred Heart being quite dominant themselves.
