Megan Konermann’s single driving in Senior Madison McCoy in Male’s two run third inning would seal the deal for the Bulldogs as they would go on to beat Assumption 4-0 in the 7th region finals on Tuesday night at UofL’s Ulmer Stadium.
“We felt like we had a good plan. Until they (Assumption) they showed us something that would make us change what we were going to do we were going to keep doing what we were doing,” said Male Head Coach Josh Bloomer. “They put a little pressure and had some opportunities there. Kelsie came up big in those moments and made some quality pitches. We made some great plays behind them. That is just what you got to do this time of season it’s nothing great. It’s making the routine plays over and over, being prepared, and just going out there and competing. That’s what our kid’s did today.”
With winning the 7th region Male is now 35-0 going into semi state on Saturday. Only team with an undefeated record leading into state was Greenwood High School out of Bowling Green who concluded their winning state record, 44-0. The Bulldogs will play against Oldham County on Saturday at UofL in semi state time is still TBA.
“The record is not really what I am worried about,” said Madison McCoy. “We are honestly just trying to look for the next game. The record coming with it is great!”
Both the Rockets and Male’s defense held their own in the first inning with Assumption’s Olivia Casey striking out two of the three batters.
The Bulldogs started to pick up the pace in the second inning with Jasmine Miller scoring the first run of the game off of single by Megan Lenhart.
The following inning McCoy started the surge with a double deep into right centerfield gap. Megan Konermann’s RBI single drove in McCoy. Lily Davis would soon follow with an opposite field double driving in Konermann that put the Bulldogs up 3-0. Male scored their final run of the game in the sixth to give them the 4-0 win.
Assumption only had four hits, two coming in the fourth, one by senior Ashton Dowdy. Dowdy is one of the four seniors that the Rockets will lose (Braxton Downs, Maggie Metzger, and Sydney Young).
“This is the class I came in with. Their freshman year was my first year here,” said Assumption Head Coach Lisa Pinkston. “They have helped me build a foundation for this program so it’s sad to see them go.”
Assumption ended their season with a 29-9.
