Manual Defeats Ballard for a Semifinal Spot

With the last day before tournament play in the Apple, Ballard and Manual battled for a spot in Sunday’s Semifinals.

Manual pulled off the win 3-0 over Ballard in the 47th Annual Apple Tournament at Sacred Heart Academy on Saturday to claim 2nd place in Varsity A Pool 2 and a spot in the Semifinals.

Manual, who started out with a 3-1 loss to Sacred Heart and then a 5-0 win against South Oldham wanted to ride on the momentum from their win coming into this game.

Senior Katherine Frey scored Manual’s first goal at the 23:42 mark of the first half. “I think this game went well,” said Frey, “I think we’ve been getting better throughout the tournament. We started kind of rough, but we’ve been getting better as a team.”

With 11:34 left in the first half, Manual struck again, scoring another goal from Alana Fields to make it 2-0 going into halftime.

Manual would not let up after halftime, in which they did not let in a single goal. Manual’s defense didn’t give Ballard many chances for shots on goal throughout the game.

Manual’s Meela Kopp scored their third and final goal with 10 minutes left in the game.

“We’re just going to keep focusing on ourselves,” said Frey. “We have to play our game and not worry about the other team.”

Manual is set to play Assumption (2-0-1) on Sunday at 4:30 in the Semifinals, with the Championship game set for Monday.
