Manual defeated Assumption in the 47th Apple Tournament Semifinals 4-1 in overtime in strokes.
Both teams were slow out of the gate, but Manual slowly started to pull away as they were able to control ball possession throughout most of the first half. However, neither team was able to get points on the board.
“Sometimes it can get frustrating, especially as a forward when you can’t get the ball in,” said Manual senior Katherine Frey. “The other team had strong defenders and we just had to try and get around it.”
The second half went much like the first, in which each team had chances to score but neither could put one in the back of the net.
With both teams being scoreless at the end of regulation, the game went into 7v7 sudden death overtime.
Prior to overtime, an Assumption player received a yellow card with 1:45 left in regulation, causing Assumption to be down a player for 3 minutes during the 10 minute period.
Fatigue was starting to set in as each team had at least 1 corner in the overtime period but neither could score. But with 2:30 left in overtime, Manual caught a break as an Assumption player received another yellow card, leaving the Rockets down 1 player for the rest of the period.
With no team being able to score in overtime, the game then went into strokes. Meela Kopp knocked the first one in for Manual followed by a goal from Becca Kline for Assumption. Katherine Frey slapped the second one in for Manual but Assumption’s Zoe Snook left it wide left, putting Manual up 2-1.
Manual was able to convert their 3rd shot and Assumption’s try was stopped, allowing Manual to go up 3-1, needing only 1 goal to advance them to the finals.
Manual hit its next one in which won them the game. “We were pretty confident going into strokes,” said Frey. “We did our best and it ended with a win for us.”
Manual is set to play Sacred Heart (4-0) on Monday at 7:45, who beat them 3-1 in a previous match earlier the tournament .
