LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Janelle Jenkins recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, but the University of Louisville volleyball team fell to the No. 21 Duke Blue Devils 25-15, 25-12, 34-32 in ACC action on Friday evening in Cardinal Arena.
Sophomore Maya McClendon finished with a double-double posting 11 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Gabbie Wiley tied Jenkins for the team lead in digs with 14, while junior Katie George added 33 assists on the night.
Louisville fell to 15-13 on the season and 7-9 in ACC action. Duke improved to 21-6 overall and 13-3 in the ACC.
In the first set, the Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-2 lead, but gave up control of the set as the Blue Devils took a 13-8 lead midway through the opening frame. Louisville got as close as 13-10 before Duke went on a 12-5 run to close out the set 25-15. Jenkins led the way for the Cardinals with seven kills.
In the second set, the action between the two teams was evenly matched early on. With the Cardinals and Blue Devils tied at 6-6, Duke used an 11-0 run to go up 17-6 and take command of the set forcing Louisville to take both of their timeouts during the run. The Blue Devils closed out the set for a 25-12 win. Freshman Tess Clark finished the set four kills to lead the Cardinals.
In the third set, Louisville took an early 9-5 lead behind two kills from McClendon and junior Laura Blab apiece forcing Duke to use an early timeout. The Cardinals pushed the lead to 13-7 on a block from Clark, the largest lead of the match for Louisville. The Blue Devils fought back using a 12-6 run to tie the score at 19-19. Both teams battled back and forth the remainder of the set as Louisville served for set point four times and Duke served for match point six times. The Blue Devils put away the match with a 34-32 score. McClendon led the way for the Cardinals with seven kills during the final set.
