State Softball Tourney: Male & Mercy Preview

Louisville’s regional softball champions will be representing the area’s softball talent at this weekend’s 2015 Worth/KHSAA Fast Pitch State Softball Tournament. Tenth-ranked Mercy claimed the Sixth Region title, while No. 4 Male took the Seventh Region. The double-elimination tournament commences on June 4 at 5:00 p.m. The championship game will be on June 6 at 1:00 p.m. The tournament will be held at Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro.

The top eight teams in the tournament are in the top half of the bracket, so two of the state’s top-14 teams will be gone after two games.

Below is a look at Male and Mercy’s first tournament match ups on June 4 at 5:00 p.m. Live stats will be provided here.

No. 2 Madisonville North-Hopkins (35-5) vs. No. 3 Male (33-7)

Three of the team’s losses were to No. 1 McCraken County. The other two came from No. 7 Ballard and No. 15 Butler. Madisonville defeated all of its other top-10 opponents.

Top hitters: Kaylee Tow (.701, 19 home runs, 54 RBIs), Mallory Peyton (.500, 16 home runs, 62 RBIs), and Morgan McElroy (.398, one home run, 39 RBIs).

Top pitcher: Heather Webb (19-2) – 1.12 ERA, 175 Ks, 71 hits, 47 BBs, and 28 runs allowed in 125 innings pitched.


Male’s first game of the season was a tough 3-4 loss to No. 9 Meade County; the Lady Bulldogs bounced back to defeat the Lady Waves 8-2 later on in the season. Male fell to Madisonville North-Hopkins 1-3 on May 8.

Top hitters: Taylor Childress (.441 in 93 AB’s and five RBIs), Amanda McIver (.411, four home run, 35 RBIs), Alyssa Case (.458, one home run, 23 RBIs), and Olivia Suski (.359, nine home runs, 30 RBIs).

Top pitcher: Olivia Suski (17-5) – 2.12 ERA, 118 Ks, 97 hits, 38 BBs, and 48 runs allowed in 122 innings pitched.


No. 9 Mercy (23-13) vs. No. 3 Scott County (30-8)

The Jaguars will look to bring home their second state title in four years. This past season, Mercy went 3-4 against top-10 teams in the state.

Top hitters: Leigh Ellen Thomas (.419, one home runs, 26 RBIs), Jordan Vorbrink (.362, 29 RBIs), Abby Wilder (.312, 25 RBIs).

Top pitcher: Leigh Ellen Thomas (17-9) – 1.72 ERA, 207 Ks, 136 hits, 25 BBs, and 50 runs allowed in 167 innings pitched.

Scott County

This past season, Scott County defeated No. 4 Male 5-4 and Woodford County 3-0. The Cardinals are 1-1 against Mercy this year.

Top hitters: Princess Valencia (.400, 15 RBIs), Jordan Ison (.392, three home runs, 29 RBIs), and Hannah Davis (.389, 1 home run, 18 RBIs).

Top pitcher: Kennedy Sullivan (20-6) – 1.57 ERA, 115 Ks, 119 hits, 25 BBs, and 68 runs allowed in 147 innings pitched.
