Wednesday’s Child: Spunky fifth grader wants to ‘see the world’ with forever family
Kaylee, 11, isn’t shy about what she likes: reading books, playing with new friends, and giving a big hug to social worker Elise Leatherwood.
She’s also not afraid to say what she doesn’t like.
“How’s fifth grade?” we asked.
“Horrible,” said Kaylee.
But her temporary disdain for the fifth grade hasn’t lessened her love for reading. She brought one of her favorite books, from the "Dog Man" collection, with her to our interview.
“I have every one of them,” she said.
Kaylee has grown up in Kentucky’s foster care system, moving in and out of foster homes and residential facilities.
“I move, move, move. I have trauma, I’m afraid of a foster family, that they’re going to hurt me,” she said.
Kaylee’s social workers said it will take time to build trust with a potential adoptive family. But stability and permanency will allow Kaylee to flourish.
“I want to know the world, I want to see the world.”
