JCPS board selects plan for new school start times for 2024-25
The Jefferson County Public Schools board has voted on new start times for the 2024-25 school year.
Two new plans were proposed last week, with both having three new start times at 7:30 a.m., 8:40 a.m., and 9:40 a.m., to replace the nine start times that were introduced for the 2023-24 school year.
Of the two scenarios proposed, the board voted Tuesday night to go with scenario 1, which would change the start times for multiple elementary, middle, and high schools within the district starting next year.

Under this plan, most elementary schools would start at 9:40 a.m., while middle and high schools would start at 7:30 or 8:40 a.m.
"It doesn't do any good to pretend like there's some perfect solution out there. When people say take the time to get this right, there is no getting it right. There is no getting it right. We have to get it the least wrong possible," said JCPS Board of Education member Chris Kolb.
This scenario was passed with a caveat, that the JCPS board will review school start times again in December.
The two plans were proposed as JCPS continues to struggle with a bus driver shortage.
Also, recently, the board voted to cut transportation for most of its magnet and traditional schools for the upcoming year to help with the shortage.
