It was a good start to his homecoming for Adam Hadwin. The former University of Louisville golfer eagled the final hole of his round in the PGA Championship on Thursday afternoon at Valhalla Golf Club to shoot a 3-under-par 68.The 36-year-old Canadian, whose best finish in a major is sixth at the U.S. Open, rolled in a 38-foot putt on the par-5, 571-yard 18th hole to finish out his round.Hadwin was tied for ninth after the morning wave of golfers at the PGA, which is led by Xander Schauffele at 9-under.“It was kind of what I hoped for the first round, 2-to-4 under, of course Xander went low, which you could see somebody doing with the conditions,” Hadwin said. “You can never win it but you can lose it. Just stay patient and focus one shot at a time. Keep moving around and it was nice to make a couple there.”Hadwin started at No. 1 and made birdie on his second hole of the day, but made the turn at even-par after a bogey at No. 7. He then made a birdie at No. 15 before the eagle to close out the round.“Softer conditions,” he said. “If you hit your lines, hit your targets you are going to have a lot of good looks for birdie.”Hadwin only hit 10 greens in regulation during the first round, so he knows he can do better.“I have to strike it better,” he said. “My short game held me in there, made a few putts. It’s kind of fine for one, maybe two rounds in a major, but you have to start hitting it a little better.”Hadwin, a 2009 graduate from UofL, is ranked as the No. 49 golfer in the world. He has one win and four top-10 finishes during his career and has career earnings of more than $22 million. He said it was nice to be back in Louisville in front of some UofL fans.“It’s exciting to be back,” he said. “Good to see some familiar faces and a lot of ‘Go Cards’ out there.”After graduating from UofL, Hadwin didn't make it full-time on to the PGA Tour until 2015. He had seven top 25 finishes that year and earned just under $1 million. He eclipsed $1 million in 2016 with a pair of top 10s and six top 25.
