YEP. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU MO. YOU’RE WELCOME. ALL RIGHT. WELL FOR DECADES WLKY HAS HELPED LOCAL CHILDREN FIND FOREVER HOMES THROUGH THE WEDNESDAY’S CHILD PROGRAM. AND THIS WEEK, CHRISTINA MORA INTRODUCES US TO 12 YEAR OLD EUGENE, A CLEVER YOUNG MAN LOOKING FOR A FOREVER FAMILY WITH PLENTY OF SIBLINGS. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN? PLAYING BASKETBALL. I SAW YOU PLAYING OVER THERE. ARE YOU AS PRETTY SPORTY GUY? YEAH. WHAT OTHER SPORTS DO YOU LIKE TO PLAY? BASEBALL. EUGENE SAYS HE WOULD CHOOSE SPORTS OR VIDEO GAMES OVER SCHOOL ANY DAY, BUT HE’S CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC TO START THE SIXTH GRADE NEXT MONTH, WHERE HIS FAVORITE SUBJECT IS MATH. THE 12 YEAR OLD DESCRIBES HIMSELF AS A GOOD PERSON WHO CAN SOMETIMES BE SHY. HE LOOKS FORWARD TO JOINING A BIG, FOREVER FAMILY, BROTHERS AND SISTERS. OKAY, SO YOU WANT YOU YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SIBLINGS? YEAH, I ALREADY HAVE SIBLINGS. THEY’RE REALLY FUN TO PLAY WITH. YEAH, SO IT’S LIKE BUILT IN PLAYMATES. YEAH. RIDE DIRT BIKES AND FOUR WHEELERS. CHILDREN WHO SPEND TIME IN KENTUCKY’S FOSTER CARE SYSTEM OFTEN LEARN WAYS OF COPING WITH STRESS AND TRAUMA. EUGENE IS NO DIFFERENT. HOW DO YOU DO IT? JUST CALM MYSELF DOWN. Summertime can be unpredictable for children in Kentucky foster care. But Eugene, 12, hopes to make the best of his time away from school. He’s cautiously optimistic about starting sixth grade next month, where his favorite subject is math.Eugene describes himself as a good person who can sometimes be shy. He looks forward to joining an adoptive family with lots of siblings. “Brothers and sisters — they’re really fun to play with,” he said. Children in foster care often learn ways of coping with stress and trauma. Eugene is no different.“I just calm myself down - playing with fidgets,” Eugene said.
