WLKY Investigates: Are weight limits on the Clark Memorial Bridge being enforced?
Weight limits remain in place on the Clark Memorial Bridge after a routine inspection found deterioration this past fall.
The limits went into place in December.
But who is responsible for enforcing these limits?
WLKY did some digging to find out.
While the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet did post weight limit signs on and near the bridge on the Louisville and southern Indiana side, they say they do not have enforcement capabilities.
Instead, Kentucky State Police and local agencies are the ones tasked with enforcement, according to KTYC.
A spokesperson with KSP said the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division has not been requested by the Louisville Metro Police Department to assist with enforcement on the Clark Memorial Bridge.
We have also reached out to LMPD about enforcement and are waiting to hear back.
Trucks can still cross over the bridge, but limits are put on weight and axle configurations.
Trucks are not completely restricted on the Clark Memorial Bridge due to lane width, as it is within the guidelines of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Highway Design Guidance Manual and AASHTO's "A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets," according to KYTC.
"We cannot restrict truck traffic due to those standards," said Morgan Woodrum, a KYTC public information officer.
Around 24,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily.
KYTC tells us 11 percent of the daily traffic comprises commercial vehicles.
We also obtained crash data from KSP.
In 2024, 69 collisions occurred on the Clark Memorial Bridge.
• There was 1 fatal collision, though it was not reported as commercial vehicle-involved.
• 15 collisions resulted in injuries; 1 of these was reported as commercial vehicle-involved, the other 14 were not.
• 53 other collisions occurred; 3 were reported as commercial vehicle-involved, the other 50 collisions were not.
The bridge remains safe for vehicles and pedestrians, and KYTC says its engineers are actively developing plans for necessary repairs to the bridge and sidewalk.
Engineers will continue to monitor the structure’s condition, and updates on the progress of repairs and any additional traffic impacts will be provided as information becomes available, according to KYTC.
A KYTC spokesperson says once repairs are made, they will restore the bridge to its standard weight limit.
