Bardstown gathers to honor fallen Officer Jason Ellis, renew calls for justice
More than a decade after the ambush and deadly shooting of Officer Jason Ellis in Bardstown, his loved ones and the community continue to honor his memory and call for justice.
A wreath was laid at his memorial as his family, fellow officers, and neighbors gathered to honor Officer Ellis.
"We honor him in the sacrifice he made. hopefully it brings to light what he did for the community," said Assistant Chief Kevin Thompson of Bardstown Police Department.
Amy Brown, Ellis's widow, expressed her enduring faith, stating, "I know one day, it will be solved."
Ellis was killed on May 25, 2013, while removing branches from the Bluegrass Parkway during his drive home. He was ambushed, shot multiple times, and killed.
To this day, the case remains unsolved. Retired Nelson County Sheriff’s Office Det. Mike Kaminski recalled the shock of the early morning call he received about Officer Ellis’ death.
“It was a complete shock. I got ready. I was supposed to come out till six. It was 3 in the morning, and I went straight to the scene and stayed out the rest of the day,” Kaminski said.
Despite the pain, Brown has found strength in her faith, focusing on building a life her late husband would be proud of.
Brown spoke of her enduring faith.
“I give God all the glory to get us through this and to live a life that I know Jason would be proud of," Brown said.
Despite the pain, Brown continues to honor her husband’s memory, focusing on her sons Parker and Hunter, who are preparing for their futures.
Though Officer Ellis's life was tragically cut short, Bardstown remembers him as a protector and hero, united in the hope that justice will one day be served.
