Bardstown gathers to honor fallen Officer Jason Ellis, renew calls for justice
MORE THAN A DECADE AFTER HIS MURDER. I’M NORMAN SEAWRIGHT. WE BEGIN WITH THAT CASE TONIGHT THAT HAS HAUNTED BARDSTOWN FOR MORE THAN A DECADE. OFFICER JASON ELLIS WAS AMBUSHED AND KILLED AFTER HIS SHIFT IN 2013, AND NO ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE. BUT AS WLKY’S JOYCE AGUIRRE REPORTS, HIS LOVED ONES AND COMMUNITY STILL HONOR HIS LEGACY EVERY YEAR AND RENEW THEIR CALLS FOR JUSTICE. HERE IN BARDSTOWN. A WREATH WAS PLACED AT THE MEMORIAL HONORING OFFICER JASON ELLIS, A FALLEN HERO WHO LOST HIS LIFE PROTECTING THIS COMMUNITY. HIS FAMILY, FELLOW OFFICERS AND NEIGHBORS ARE REFUSING TO GIVE UP HOPE FOR ANSWERS. I KNOW ONE DAY I DO STILL HAVE FAITH THAT IT WILL BE SOLVED. A COMMUNITY CAME TOGETHER TO REMEMBER BARDSTOWN POLICE OFFICER JASON ELLIS. WE HONOR HIM AND THE SACRIFICE HE MADE. HOPEFULLY IT BRINGS TO LIGHT. YOU KNOW WHAT HE DID FOR THE COMMUNITY. IT WAS ON MAY 25TH, 2013, WHEN OFFICER ELLIS WAS HEADED HOME FROM WORK WHEN HE STOPPED TO CLEAR TREE BRANCHES OFF OF EXIT 34 ON THE BLUEGRASS PARKWAY AS HE ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE DEBRIS. HE WAS AMBUSHED, SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES, AND KILLED. A RETIRED NELSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S DETECTIVE RECALLS THE MOMENT HE GOT THE CALL. HE WAS IN COMPLETE SHOCK. GOT READY. I WASN’T SUPPOSED TO COME OUT UNTIL SIX. THIS WAS 3:00 IN THE MORNING, AND I WENT STRAIGHT TO THE SCENE AND STAYED OUT THE REST OF THE DAY. HE LOOKED BACK. ON THE DAYS THAT FOLLOWED. I REMEMBER IT BEING LONG DAYS, LONG WEEKS. BUT WE STAYED TOGETHER, LEANED ON EACH OTHER FOR SUPPORT, AND TRY TO MAKE THE BEST OF WHAT WE COULD. AND REMEMBER JASON THE WAY HE WAS. FOR MANY OF HIS FELLOW OFFICERS, THE PAIN IS STILL TOO DIFFICULT TO SPEAK ABOUT. FOR JASON’S WIFE, AMY HAS LEANED ON HER FAITH. IT’S BEEN A LONG HEALING PROCESS, BUT WE HAVE A VERY STRONG FAITH. I GIVE GOD ALL THE GLORY, I GUESS, TO, YOU KNOW, GET US THROUGH THIS AND TO LIVE A LIFE THAT I KNOW JASON WOULD BE PROUD OF. NOW SHE’S LOOKING TO THE FUTURE AS HER SONS PREPARE FOR LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL. PARKER. HE HAS JOINED THE AIR NATIONAL GUARD, SO HE’LL BE LEAVING SOON FOR BASIC TRAINING. AND THEN HE’LL GO TO CUMBERLAND COLLEGE. THAT’S WHERE JASON AND I WENT. AND THEN HUNTER, HE WILL HAVE A TRANSITIONAL PROGRAM THAT WE’LL BE DOING. A LIFE CUT SHORT, BUT A LEGACY THAT LIVES ON THROUGH A COMMUNITY THAT REFUSES TO FORGET. IN BARDSTOWN, JOYCE O’LEARY, W-L-K-Y NEWS. JOYCE. AMAZING TO SEE THEM HOLDING ON AND KEEPING THAT HOPE ALIVE. THERE’S A NUMBER ON YOUR SCREEN RIGHT NOW. IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT OFFICER JASON ELLIS MURDER. CALL ONE 800. CALL FBI. THERE’S A COMBINED REWARD OF MORE THAN $200,000, INCLUDING 50,000 FROM THE FBI.
