Caufield's Novelty keeping Halloween spirit alive despite tariff hurdles

Caufield's Novelty keeping Halloween spirit alive despite tariff hurdles
FORM@WLKY.COM. WELL, WE ARE IN THE FINAL STRETCH TOWARDS HALLOWEEN, AND FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS, CORNFIELDS HAS BEEN THE GO TO PLACE FOR MANY PEOPLE TO GET THEIR COSTUMES. BUT AS OUR SAM CARTER DISCOVERED, THIS YEAR’S HALLOWEEN SEASON ISN’T LIKE ANY OTHER IN THE SHOP’S HISTORY. IT’S HALLOWEEN SEASON, AND THAT MEANS IT’S A BUSY TIME HERE AT CORN FIELDS. BUT SOMETHING THAT HAS IMPACTED SO MANY INDUSTRIES COULD AFFECT YOUR HALLOWEEN. ACCORDING TO OWNER TRACI CAULFIELD JOHNSON, CORNFIELDS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO ADJUST TO CHANGING TIMES. WE STARTED A WEBSITE AS EARLY AS YOU COULD, YOU KNOW, BACK IN THE THE 1940S, 30S, WE SOLD MODEL AND HOBBY ITEMS, YOU KNOW, YOU JUST HAVE TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AS TO WHAT’S POPULAR AND ROLL WITH THAT AND MAKE CHANGES. THIS YEAR IS NO DIFFERENT FOR THE 105 YEAR OLD HALLOWEEN STORE, BUT THE NEW FACTORS THEY’RE DEALING WITH ARE NOT TECHNOLOGICAL, AND THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH DEMAND, BUT RATHER EVERYTHING TO DO WITH SUPPLY. THINGS ARE A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT TO GET THIS YEAR WITH THE TARIFF SITUATION, SO I THINK A LOT OF THE VENDORS, YOU KNOW, WE’RE VERY CAUTIOUS. THEY DIDN’T BRING IN AS MANY CONTAINERS THIS YEAR. OBVIOUSLY EVERY CONTAINER THEY BROUGHT IN, THEY HAD TO PAY TARIFFS ON THIS SUPPLY ISSUE IS FAR FROM ONE THAT CAULFIELD IS FACING ALONE. MOST MASS PRODUCED HALLOWEEN COSTUMES COME FROM CHINA, WHICH CURRENTLY FACES ABOUT A 30% TARIFF ON THINGS LIKE COSTUMES. THAT IMPACTS THE NUMBER OF COSTUMES ORDERED BY STATESIDE WHOLESALERS, WHICH IN TURN MEANS THEY HAVE FEWER TO SELL TO. BUSINESSES LIKE CAULFIELD. WITH MUCH OF THE HALLOWEEN INDUSTRY BEING TREND BASED, THE LACK OF DAY TO DAY SUPPLY MAKES PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY LIKE WITH LICENSED STUFF. YOU KNOW, THINGS THAT ARE POPULAR FOR ONE YEAR AND MAY NOT BE POPULAR THE NEXT YEAR. STOCK HAS BEEN VERY LIMITED. NOW, IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHAT THE BIG HALLOWEEN COSTUME IS THIS YEAR, WELL, IT SHOULD COME AS NO SURPRISE. K-POP DEMON HUNTER. YEAH, THEY
