Wednesday's Child hosts holiday party for foster children in Kentucky
Wednesday's Child and the Knights of Columbus hosted their annual holiday party, providing foster children with gifts and a sense of community as they celebrate the season together.
Thirteen-year-old Estefani Siccano expressed her excitement about her upcoming adoption, saying, "Hopefully my adoption goes well—I'm going to ask for that for Christmas." She added, "It's really exciting knowing that a family actually wants me for who I am and not people who just get me to like, be famous or look cool."
Seventeen-year-old Lorenzo Betts shared his feelings about the event, stating, "It's really cool. It's something that I've never really experienced before and it's something I want to be able to provide for somebody else in the future."
The importance of supporting kids through Wednesday's Child, not just by giving them presents or letting them meet Santa, was emphasized by making them feel special during the holiday season.
"It brings positive emotions, positive memories, to their childhood, which all children should be able to access and feel safe," said Shawnte West with Jefferson County DCBS.
"It just warms your heart—and that's why we do it because unless you've been in their situation, you don't know what feeling they get from it," said Steve Arnold with the Knights of Columbus.
The party also offers an opportunity for the children to build connections with each other.
"A lot of them have been in foster care for a number of years, unfortunately, and it's a good opportunity for them to meet some of the other kids they've been in other homes with," said Tim Wallen with Wednesday's Child.
Estefani expressed her gratitude for the friendships she has formed, saying, "All these kids have experienced different things, and, and I'm grateful for all the kids that are in here. And I'm grateful for all the grown ups that have made this possible for us."
Wednesday's Child is celebrating 45 years, and this coming Monday night is the annual WLKY Wednesday's Child Adoptathon special to raise money and awareness for this important cause.
