The year's last supermoon — when a full moon occurs while the moon is closest to Earth, making it appear about 14% bigger than usual — lit up the sky on the night of Dec. 5. This particular supermoon was also called the "Cold Moon" for the December full moon's association with the coldest weather and longest nights of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
