RIGHT NOW ON WLKY. THIS IS BREAKING NEWS. BREAKING NEWS? TONIGHT, A CAR CRASHED INTO A GAS LINE, SPARKING A LARGE FIRE AT THE ROLLING HILLS APARTMENT COMPLEX IN EAST LOUISVILLE. FIRE CREWS ARE STILL ON THE SCENE AT LANGSTON DRIVE AND WESTPORT ROAD, WHERE WE JUST GOT AN UPDATE FROM FIRST RESPONDERS. THAT IS WHERE JAMIE MAYES IS LIVE FOR US TONIGHT WITH LATE BREAKING DEVELOPMENTS. JAMIE. VICKI, WE WERE JUST TOLD BY FIREFIGHTERS THAT THIS WAS A VERY LARGE AND UNUSUAL FIRE FOR THEM TO RESPOND TO HERE TODAY, RIGHT BEHIND ME YOU CAN SEE SOME OF WHAT IS WHAT THEY RESPONDED TO EARLIER. HERE’S A CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS INTERSECTION, WHICH WE BELIEVE TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF THIS COLLISION, AS WELL AS THIS BUILDING. HERE YOU CAN SEE ANOTHER CAR THAT HAS CRASHED INTO IT. WE’RE TOLD THAT COLLISION THERE IS WHAT SPARKED THIS FIRE. NOW WE’RE SEEING SOME VIDEO EARLIER TODAY FROM WLKY NEWS CHOPPER. THAT VIDEO SHOWS A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING AT THE SCENE EARLIER TODAY. OFFICERS RESPONDED TO AN INJURY ACCIDENT AT WESTPORT ROAD AND LANGDON. WE’RE TOLD TWO CARS COLLIDED NEAR THE INTERSECTION, AND AFTER THAT IMPACT, ONE OF THE CARS LEFT THE ROADWAY, STRUCK A GAS LINE AND CRASHED INTO AN APARTMENT BUILDING. A FIRE STARTED AT THAT BUILDING. WE’RE TOLD THAT AT LEAST ONE PERSON WAS INSIDE AND HAD TO BE EVACUATED, BUT THERE WERE EIGHT UNITS THAT WERE A PART OF THIS BUILDING. WE’RE STILL WAITING TO LEARN ABOUT HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE DISPLACED. NOW, WE SPOKE TO CREWS EARLIER TODAY WHO GAVE US A LITTLE BIT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT JUST THE RESPONSE THAT WENT INTO GETTING PEOPLE OUT. THEY SAID THAT IT’S REALLY SECONDS THAT MATTER IN SITUATIONS LIKE THIS. AND WITH THE HELP OF EVERYONE TOGETHER, THEY WERE ABLE TO GET THE PEOPLE OUT OF THIS BUILDING. WE HAD A LMPD MAJOR WANT TO THANK LMPD, THIS MAJOR SAW THE INCIDENT HAPPENED, MADE HER WAY UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR TO ATTEMPT TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT THERE WAS A FIRE, A PROBLEM AND EVACUATE. ALSO. GCPS OFFICER WAS DRIVING BY AND SAW THE CONDITIONS WORSENING. HE WENT UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR AND EVACUATED HER OFF OF THERE. IT WAS JUST TOO UNSAFE TO STAY UP THERE. NOW WE’RE TOLD THAT NO ONE INSIDE THE BUILDING WAS HURT. ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO WAS INSIDE ONE OF THE CARS HERE HAD NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. ANOTHER PERSON WAS TREATED AT THE SCENE. Multiple crews are on the scene of an apartment fire off Westport Road Tuesday.Anchorage Middletown Fire said they, along with St. Matthews Fire, responded to a fire at Langdon Place off Westport Road. Louisville Metro Police Department said a crash led to the fire. An SUV and sedan crashed at the intersection of Langdon and Westport, causing the SUV to hit a gas line and the apartment building.Police said as the building caught fire, residents were evacuated and no one inside was injured. Fire crews were on scene within one minute and started battling the blaze.St. Matthews Fire said an LMPD major witnessed the incident and alerted residents at the apartments about the fire, helping them evacuate. Additionally, a JCPS officer was driving by and helped the LMPD major get back to safety.The drivers involved in the crash have non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. A viewer sent in photos, where you could see a large blaze coming from the roof of the building.WLKY NewsChopper flew over the building and the majority of the roof had collapsed from the fire.Watch aerials from the scene in the player below:It took a little more than an hour for crews to get the fire under control.LMPD is still working to determine the cause of the crash. They said charges are not expected at this time.TARC was called to assist residents affected by the fire, giving them a warm place on buses until the Red Cross is able to help them.
