US star Mikaela Shiffrin takes gold in slalom to break 8-year Olympic medal drought
Mikaela Shiffrin saying she is grateful to be back in Olympic form and to be on the slopes of Cortina. It's an area that she is familiar with and she knows how to succeed there. Shiffrin says that she is feeling pretty excited to be competing. She's been in 4 different Olympic Games, all wildly different, but she remains wide-eyed about competing in front of the world. I feel so much gratitude to be here. It's like excitement. There's adrenaline. I'm certainly nervous at times, but Really *** lot of *** sense of gratitude and I'm just, I'm excited to take that with me for the entire time that we're here. She was also asked about much of the spotlight being on Lindsey Vonn following her ACL injury and quick return to action. Shiffrin says she'll be in Vonn's cheering section. I'm so excited to watch. I think we all are. I mentioned tenacity just now, her tenacity and grit and what she's showing up with this Olympics and staying true to her own values, that's just. That's straight up beautiful. Shiffrin says she knows there are things she needs to work on. One is not backing off in corners where other skiers are going harder, and those skiers usually win. Also, she says she wants to be on that outside ski. It was *** factor in her crash, and she says if you're on the outside, you're in the driver's seat at the Milan Cortina Games. I'm Jason Newton.

The race isn’t officially over yet, with dozens of lower-tier racers still to take the course. But Shiffrin is the leader after the fastest 30 skiers from the first run.

World champion Camille Rast was in silver medal position and Anna Swenn Larsson in third.

After delivering an exquisite second run to build on her 0.82-run lead from the morning, Shiffrin stopped in the finish area to take it all, slowly squatted and was embraced by the other medalists.

Then all the emotion came out: Shiffrin pumped her fists to the crowd and then was fighting back tears as she approached her mom and coach, Eileen.

Maybe it was a release of all the pressure on Shiffrin, for many the greatest Alpine skier of all time, who had failed to win an Olympic medal since a gold and silver in Pyeongchang in 2018.

A nightmarish 0-for-6 performance in Beijiing was followed in Cortina d’Ampezzo with an 11th place in the giant slalom and a fourth-place finish with Breezy Johnson in the team combined, in which Shiffrin placed 15th in the slalom portion.

Her first gold came in the slalom as a fresh-faced teenager in Sochi 12 years ago, so her Olympic journey has come full circle in her favorite event.
