Get the Facts: How Kentucky's new drivers licensing system plans to save drivers time
SESSION IS OVER. WE’RE LOOKING BACK AT THE BILLS THAT PASSED AND THE EXPECTED IMPACT. FIRST, AT 530, THE STATE WILL SOON LAUNCH A NEW SYSTEM TO ISSUE DRIVER’S LICENSES. THE SWITCH WILL HAPPEN IN JUNE, AND OFFICIALS SAY IT WILL STREAMLINE MULTIPLE PROCESSES AT THE REGIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OFFICES. ADDIE MEINERS IS GETTING THE FACTS ON HOW THE NEW SYSTEM WILL WORK, AND HOW IT COULD ALLOW YOU TO DO MORE FROM HOME. FOR THE PAST 40 YEARS, THE KENTUCKY TRANSPORTATION CABINET HAS USED THE SAME SOFTWARE TO ISSUE DRIVER’S LICENSES ACROSS THE STATE. BUT NOW WITH THIS NEW SOFTWARE, OFFICIALS SAY IT’S GOING TO BE LIKE GOING FROM APOLLO 13 TO ARTEMIS. IT WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A BETTER EXPERIENCE BOTH ON THE BACK END WITH OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTERS AND OUR 35 REGIONAL OFFICES, AS WELL AS PROVIDE A GATEWAY TO NEW AND BETTER ONLINE SERVICES. THE NEW SYSTEM IS CALLED KENDLE, OR THE KENTUCKY INFORMATION NETWORK FOR DRIVER’S LICENSING AND WHAT IT WILL DO. ALAN BLAIR WITH KYTC SAYS, IS STREAMLINE LICENSING PROCESSES. A COUPLE OF THE BIG BENEFITS WILL BE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT AND BE ABLE TO REAPPLY FOR A LICENSE, SO THAT WILL SAVE SOME TIME ON THE FRONT END BY HAVING YOUR DOCUMENTATION AND INFORMATION READY. YOU’LL STILL NEED TO COME IN TO THE OFFICE IN MOST CASES, FOR EXAMPLE, TO TAKE A DRIVER’S PERMIT TEST. BUT FOR OTHER NEEDS LIKE RENEWING YOUR LICENSE, CHANGING YOUR ADDRESS, OR REPLACING A LOST LICENSE, IT CAN ALL BE DONE ONLINE THROUGH YOUR KENDLE MY DRIVE ACCOUNT. WITH FEWER PEOPLE NEEDING TO COME INTO THE OFFICE, BLAIR SAYS IT SHOULD REDUCE WAIT TIMES AT REGIONAL OFFICES EVEN FURTHER. RIGHT NOW, OUR OUR WAIT TIMES ARE 16 MINUTES ON AVERAGE ACROSS THE STATE FOR WALK IN CUSTOMERS AND ABOUT TEN MINUTES FOR APPOINTMENTS. SO, YOU KNOW, WE’RE SEEING GREAT SUCCESS THERE AND WE’RE GOING TO BUILD ON THAT WITH THIS NEW SYSTEM. BUT IMPLEMENTING THIS NEW SYSTEM, BLAIR SAYS, IS GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME. SO ALL REGIONAL LICENSING OFFICES WILL CLOSE JUNE 4TH AND FIFTH TO TRANSITION TO THE NEW SYSTEM, AND THEN HOURS WILL BE REDUCED FROM JUNE 8TH TO JUNE 18TH. WHILE CREWS GET USED TO KENDALL. SO IF YOU NEED AN APPOINTMENT IN JUNE, BLAIR SAYS IT’S BEST TO GET IT DONE EARLY. OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE IS SERVED. WE DON’T WANT SOMEONE COMING IN WITH A NEW SYSTEM AND, YOU KNOW, ENCOUNTERING AN ERROR AND HAVING TO WAIT FOR A LENGTHY PERIOD OF TIME. SO WE’RE BUILDING IN SOME TIME INTO THE DAILY SCHEDULE SO THAT WE C

Kentucky will launch a new driver's licensing system, the Kentucky Information Network for Driver Licensing, in June, replacing decades-old software to improve services at regional offices and online. KINDL will enhance customer experiences both in person and online, according to Allen Blair, a spokesperson for KYTC. “It will be able to provide a better experience both on the back end with our customer service centers in our 35 regional offices, as well as provide a gateway to new and better online services,” Blair said. Blair explained that KINDL will allow users to create accounts and pre-apply for licenses, saving time by preparing documentation and information in advance. While certain tasks, such as taking a driver’s permit test, will still require an in-office visit, other services — license renewals, address changes and lost license replacements — can be completed online through the KINDL “My Drive” account. Blair said fewer in-office visits should further reduce wait times at regional offices. “Right now, our wait times are 16 minutes on average across the state for walk-in customers and about 10 minutes for appointment. So, you know, we're seeing great success there, and we're going to build on that with this new system,” Blair said. The transition to KINDL will require temporary adjustments. All regional licensing offices will close on June 4 and 5 to implement the new system. From June 8 to 18, office hours will be reduced to 8 a.m. to noon for walk-ins, with the remainder of the day reserved for appointments. “Our goal is to make sure that everyone is served. We don't want someone coming in with the new system, encountering an error, and having to wait for a lengthy period of time. So, we're building in some time into the daily schedule so that we can serve everyone that needs it,” Blair said. KYTC advises residents to schedule appointments early if they need services in June to avoid potential delays during the transition period. Walk-ins will still be allowed during reduced hours from June 8-18.
