Silent Tactic is first horse to scratch from Kentucky Derby
The first horse to scratch from the 2026 Kentucky Derby is Silent Tactic.
Trainer Mark Casse said Arkansas Derby runner-up Silent Tactic had a foot issue flare up this week, and while the issue is “very minor,” it will keep him from running in Saturday’s 152nd Derby at Churchill Downs.
The horse was slotted in post position 13. He's jockeyed by Cristian Torres.
So, who will take his place? Great White, trained by John Ennis and jockeyed by Alex Achard.
“Hate it for the connections, but we are excited,” Ennis said.
Casse said Silent Tactic has battled a foot issue for a while, noting that it comes and goes and there's no way to tell when it might happen.
“He’s had a foot issue for a long time, and it comes, and it goes,” Casse said. “You never know when it’s going to happen, and when we trained him this morning, he wasn’t perfect. I’d rather go ahead and address it now, and I think we can get it better and make the Preakness Stakes.
“I didn’t want it lingering on, and also I didn’t want to keep others from being able to run,” he said.
Silent Tactic is owned by 89-year-old John Oxley, who won the Derby with Monarchos in 2001, and would have been ridden by Cristian Torres. It would have been the first Derby for Torres.
“It’s always disappointing,” Casse said. “I am more disappointed for Mr. Oxley, he is 89 years old and won the Derby 25 years ago. I am more disappointed for Cristian Torres, who was going to ride in his first Derby. Me, I have been doing it for 47 years, I get it. It’s just a little bump in the road.”
A son of Tacitus, Silent Tactic was No. 7 on the Kentucky Derby points list with 100. He has two wins and four runner-up finishes in his six career starts.
Silent Tactic broke his maiden last October at Woodbine, but did all of his racing as a 3-year-old at Oaklawn Park. He won the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes and then lost by a nose to Class President in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes before the Arkansas Derby.
