Kentucky Derby 152 notebook - Wednesday, April 29
For the second time in two years, trainer John Ennis had a horse on the also-eligible list get into the field for the Kentucky Derby. He had to wait one day longer this year, but he will still have his second starter with Great White.
The massive son of Volatile was the first of four on the also-eligible list and draws in after Arkansas Derby runner-up Silent Tactic was scratched from the race earlier this morning because of a foot injury.
Great White, trained by Ennis and owned by Three Chimneys and Ennis, will be ridden by Alex Achard. Great White will break from post No. 20. Silent Tactic was in the No. 13 post position, so all the horses from 14 out will move down one spot.
“It’s great,” Ennis said. “We know now exactly where we are going and what we are doing. I am sorry about the horse that scratched and the connections. That can’t be a nice feeling. But yeah, we’re happy to be in, and we’re excited.”
In 2024, Epic Ride was No. 21 on the also eligible list and drew in on Tuesday of Derby week when Encino was injured. Epic Ride finished 14th in the Derby, which was the first ever for Ennis.
“It’s great to even be considered for the Derby, and to be in it again is a great feeling,” Ennis said. “We’re going to try and win it this time.”
Great White, a grey colt, is the largest horse in the Derby field. Ennis said he’s a little more than 17.2 hands - which equates as a “giant horse” who would measure about 5-foot-10 at the withers.
“He’s a big boy,” Ennis said. “He’s still a baby. He’s a gentle giant really.”
Great White won the John Battaglia Stakes at Turfway Park but then finished fifth in the Blue Grass Stakes. Ennis said he’s training well.
“He has to improve, especially off the last race,” Ennis said. “This week he has trained way better. He trained exceptionally well this morning. He has more energy and more life about him. Let’s see. Let’s see.”
My Miss Mo Scratches from Oaks
Gulfstream Park Oaks runner-up My Miss Mo will be scratched from Friday’s Kentucky Oaks.
The defection will allow the first also eligible - Nycon - to get into the race.
My Miss Mo has a win and three second-place finishes in five career starts. She broke her maiden by 12 lengths in a November win at Gulfstream. She is trained by Saffie Joseph and was to be ridden by Micah Husbands.
Nycon is trained by Louisville native Whit Beckman and was fourth in the Gazelle Stakes in her last outing. The daughter of Nyquist has a win - at Churchill Downs - and two seconds in five career starts.
Danon Bourbon looking good
The last of the three foreign horses that showed up at the Downs is Danon Bourbon.
The Fukuryu Stakes winner arrived late last week and wasn’t on the track until Sunday. He has looked good on the track and on Tuesday had a half-mile breeze in 52.80 seconds.
Kate Hunter, speaking on behalf of Danon Bourbon’s connections, said the colt continues to handle Churchill Downs well.
“He seems to be moving over the track well and they are really hopeful his pedigree will shine through,” Hunter said.
Tip of the day
The last two Derby winners were not near the front of the past after the opening half mile of the race.
Sovereignty was 16th last year and Mystik Dan was in sixth two years ago.
Those two ended a streak of Derby winners in first, second or third after a half mile. Seven of the previous 10 winners were up there close and that number would have been eight if not for the disqualification of Maximum Security in 2019.
Quote of the day
Kate Hunter, the Japanese representative for Churchill Downs, joked about the possibility of a Japanese horse winning the Derby.
“My goal in life is to be some American trainer’s worst nightmare, to bring over a Japanese horse that’s going to ruin Kentucky Derby day, so I apologize in advance,” she said with a laugh.
