New retro-themed dessert shop proving to be a hit in New Albany
A new bakery in New Albany, Indiana with a retro vibe is drawing big crowds.
Norma Jean's Bakery opened in April and has already built a loyal following, with customers often lining up down the street before the doors even open.
The woman behind the bakery, Jerrica Tinsley, says the business is deeply personal to her.
The shop is named after her grandmother, and while she's been baking for more than a decade, this marks her first-ever storefront.
Everything she sells is homemade, including cakes and brownies that are often gone within hours.
Part of the bakery’s growing popularity also comes from Tinsley's signature vintage "housewife" style.
"The housewife look, yes, that’s intentional. A friend of mine made a post that said, ‘You should look like what you’re selling,’" Tinsley said.
She took her friend's advice, making the look a part of her brand, and her business quickly took off after that.
"We sold out that first day the following weekend,” she said. “The first time I dressed that way, and I never went back."
Norma Jean's is currently open just on Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., but Tinsley said she's planning to expand her store hours on June 1 and add another day.
