DeSales seniors forced to miss volleyball quarterfinals for graduation
For the second straight season, DeSales volleyball is in the KHSAA state volleyball quarterfinals.
However, for the Colts seniors, a match on Friday night against North Bullitt at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester presents quite the conundrum.
The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
DeSales' commencement is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Iroquois Amphitheater.
"They don't get a choice," DeSales volleyball head coach Cat Hall said. "They have to go to graduation. I wish back in the day, when you got the option to go to state or go to graduation, because graduations aren't super duper fun, but it's a fun time for the family. I know that a couple of our kids if they had to choose, I feel like they would choose volleyball."
"It's frustration," DeSales senior Josh Porter said. "It is what it is, we're gonna make the most of the situation and we're going to do everything we can to win."
The challenge for the Colts will be to beat North Bullitt to advance to the semifinals on Saturday, when they would have their full squad. DeSales is 20-6 and did beat the Eagles 3-0 in the first match of the season on March 2.
"Five seniors, they've been doing this for four years," Hall added. "I mean playing volleyball since they were like 10, 11, 12, it just, it hurts, makes me sad for them."
"We've kind of poured our hearts into this program for the past four years, so to see it possibly end and us not even be there, really hurts," Porter said. "We have a great second string, we're very blessed to have that, and I think this group can still do great things. We believe in them and we know they can do it."
Hall said she will still have three starters for the match on Friday.
When asked about the DeSales dilemma, the KHSAA responded.
Media Relations and Communications Director Brian Milam sent the following statement:
"The dates for the boys' volleyball tournament were published beginning last year, as approved by the board, and included in the annual Online Rules Clinic that the coaches complete. This is done in advance to help our schools try to avoid any conflicts. Unfortunately, this time of year, there will be some, as there are varying events with proms and graduation activities. The full bracket of times was released following the draw to allow schools to plan accordingly. A school can have an unlimited number of students on its roster and then dress 15 individuals for each match so that games can be played."
Boys volleyball became a KHSAA sanctioned sport for the 2024-25 season.
