Crews 'confident' I-65 closure in Louisville will only last 2 months
Officials with the I-65 Central Corridor project are confident the project will stay on schedule.
A five-mile stretch of I-65 in Louisville will close in both directions starting June 1 as part of a major bridge replacement project. The interstate is set to reopen two lanes in both directions by Aug. 1.
Mindy Peterson, spokesperson for the I-65 Corridor Project, said the closure will begin promptly. Crews will begin work as soon as the interstate shuts down, at 12:01 a.m. on June 1.
"The things we feel good about, we have our work crew assembled. We have supplies and materials assembled. So those challenges are already taken off the board to begin with," Peterson said.
Preparation work has been ongoing for months, including completing the underside of the bridges and pre-assembling much of the needed infrastructure.
Seventy large steel beams are assembled and ready to be put into place. Those beams are sitting at three sites across downtown.
Pre-poured concrete decking will go on top of those steel beams, which Peterson said are also already assembled.
"They fit together almost like a puzzle. So you put beams in place, you kind of puzzle out and put together these precast deck panels. Then you have a concrete pour that just kind of fills in the gaps there. And then we do a very nice overlay, smooth surface for drivers," Peterson said.
The biggest disturbance neighbors and business owners can expect is during the first few weeks of work. That's when crews will be demolishing the three bridges. They'll be working 24/7 to do so.
"If we did not [work 24/7], this two-month closure would have several months of a full closure added to that, just to get the same amount of work done," Peterson said.
Peterson noted that the disruption will be short-lived as crews work to reopen two lanes of I-65 by August 1.
Part of I-65 will be reopened by July 1, from the Watterson to University Boulevard.
Peterson suggests downloading traffic navigation apps like Waze as soon as possible. She also suggests driving your alternate route a few times ahead of the shutdown.
