Crews 'confident' I-65 closure in Louisville will only last 2 months

Crews 'confident' I-65 closure in Louisville will only last 2 months
INJURIES. STATE AUTHORITIES ARE BEING CALLED TO THE SCENE TO ASSIST WITH THE INVESTIGATION. WELL, THE MAJOR SHUTDOWN OF I-65 THROUGH THE HEART OF LOUISVILLE WILL SNARL TRAFFIC ACROSS THE METRO IN TWO WEEKS. A FIVE MILE STRETCH WILL CLOSE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FROM JEFFERSON STREET DOWNTOWN OUT TO THE WATERSHED. ADDIE MEINERS HAD A CHANCE TO TALK WITH PROJECT LEADERS TODAY AND ADDIE. WHY ARE THEY SO CONFIDENT THAT CREWS WILL FINISH THIS WORK ON TIME? RICK. THAT CONFIDENCE COMES FROM WHAT YOU SEE BEHIND ME. WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING AT IS ACTUALLY THE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT’S GOING TO MAKE UP THE BRIDGES THAT THEY PLAN TO REPLACE ALONG I-65. AND IF YOU CAN’T ALREADY TELL, THEY’RE ALREADY PRE-ASSEMBLED. MORNING DRIVE ON MONDAY, JUNE 1ST. WE FULLY ANTICIPATE THIS FIVE MILE SECTION OF I-65 TO BE CLOSED. AND WE’LL HAVE CREWS OUT DOING WORK HITTING THE GROUND RUNNING ON JUNE 1ST IS SOMETHING MINDY PETERSON, THE SPOKESPERSON FOR THE I-65 CORRIDOR PROJECT, SAYS IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE BECAUSE THERE’S SO MUCH TO DO AND ONLY TWO MONTHS TO DO IT. THE THINGS WE FEEL GOOD ABOUT, WE HAVE WORK CREW ASSEMBLED. WE HAVE SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS ASSEMBLED. SO THOSE CHALLENGES ARE ALREADY TAKEN OFF THE BOARD TO BEGIN WITH. WORK HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR MONTHS TO PREPARE THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BRIDGES, AND PETERSON SAYS IT’S ALMOST COMPLETE. BUT MOST OF THE CONFIDENCE IN HITTING THAT TARGET CLOSING DATE IS BECAUSE MUCH OF THE NEEDED INFRASTRUCTURE IS ALREADY ASSEMBLED, LIKE THESE 140 FOOT, 50,000 POUND STEEL BEAMS. ONE BEAM WILL BE DELIVERED VIA A TRUCK, A VERY LONG BED TRUCK THAT WILL DELIVER ONE BEAM AT A TIME. SET THAT BEAM AND WE HAVE ABOUT 70 BEAMS THAT WILL BE PLACING ON THOSE THREE BRIDGES. ONCE THE BEAMS ARE SET IN PLACE, THE CONCRETE DECKING WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN POURED WILL BE PLACED ON TOP. THEY GO TOGETHER ALMOST LIKE A PUZZLE. SO YOU PUT THE BEAMS IN PLACE. YOU KIND OF PUZZLE OUT AND PUT TOGETHER THESE PRECAST DECK PANELS. THEN YOU HAVE A CONCRETE POUR THAT JUST KIND OF FILLS IN THE GAPS THERE. AND THEN WE DO A VERY NICE OVERLAY, SMOOTH SURFACE FOR DRIVERS. THE BIGGEST HEADACHE TO ANTICIPATE IF YOU LIVE OR WORK NEAR THE CONSTRUCTION IS THE DEMOLITION OF THE CURRENT BRIDGES, WHICH WILL START IMMEDIATELY. AND PETERSON SAYS THEY’RE GOING TO BE WORKING 24 OVER SEVEN UNTIL THAT PORTION OF THE PROJECT IS FINISHED. IF WE DID NOT, THIS TWO MONTH CLOSURE WOULD HAVE SEVERAL MONTHS OF A FULL CLOSURE. ADDED TO THAT, JUST TO GET THE SAME AMOUNT OF WORK DONE. PETERSON SAYS THE LOUDEST OF THAT DEMOLITION WORK IS GOING TO COME IN THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS OF CONSTRUCTION. SO IF YOU LIVE IN AREAS LIKE OLD LOUISVILLE AND SMOKETOWN, JUST KIND OF BE AWARE THAT THAT’S GOING TO BE HAPPENING IN THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS OF CONSTRUCTION. BUT PETERSON SAYS THEY’RE GOING TO TRY AND GET THAT DONE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, BECAUSE THEY WANT TO STAY ON THAT TIMELINE. THE PLAN IS TO HAVE TWO LANES OF I-65 REOPENED IN BOT

Officials with the I-65 Central Corridor project are confident the project will stay on schedule. A five-mile stretch of I-65 in Louisville will close in both directions starting June 1 as part of a major bridge replacement project. The interstate is set to reopen two lanes in both directions by Aug. 1.Mindy Peterson, spokesperson for the I-65 Corridor Project, said the closure will begin promptly. Crews will begin work as soon as the interstate shuts down, at 12:01 a.m. on June 1. "The things we feel good about, we have our work crew assembled. We have supplies and materials assembled. So those challenges are already taken off the board to begin with," Peterson said. Preparation work has been ongoing for months, including completing the underside of the bridges and pre-assembling much of the needed infrastructure. Seventy large steel beams are assembled and ready to be put into place. Those beams are sitting at three sites across downtown.Pre-poured concrete decking will go on top of those steel beams, which Peterson said are also already assembled. "They fit together almost like a puzzle. So you put beams in place, you kind of puzzle out and put together these precast deck panels. Then you have a concrete pour that just kind of fills in the gaps there. And then we do a very nice overlay, smooth surface for drivers," Peterson said. The biggest disturbance neighbors and business owners can expect is during the first few weeks of work. That's when crews will be demolishing the three bridges. They'll be working 24/7 to do so. "If we did not , this two-month closure would have several months of a full closure added to that, just to get the same amount of work done," Peterson said. Peterson noted that the disruption will be short-lived as crews work to reopen two lanes of I-65 by August 1.Part of I-65 will be reopened by July 1, from the Watterson to University Boulevard. Peterson suggests downloading traffic navigation apps like Waze as soon as possible. She also suggests driving your alternate route a few times ahead of the shutdown. For more information on the project, click here.
