Cyclist recovering after hit-and-run in St. Matthews; police looking for suspect
Karson Durbin is slowly recovering after he was hit by a car while riding his e-bike in St. Matthews.
On May 14, he says he was traveling northbound on Bowling Boulevard when a car struck him from behind near Mall St. Matthews.
He suffered multiple injuries, including a facial fracture, a split lip that needed stitches and more.
"Last thing I remember is being on my hands and knees and a lady asking me if I was OK, and I supposedly looked at her and said, like, 'Yeah,' and she was like, 'Oh no, honey,'" he said.
Durbin says he can barely close his hand, which, as a mechanic, makes it hard to work.
"So, I mean, I can't really grab a tire without being in pain," he said.
It's a slow recovery.
The person who hit him? He does not know and did not see.
"When I hit my face on the ground it shattered my glasses. So, even if I was able to look up and see, there would have been no way because my face was covered in blood," he said.
His bike is his main mode of transportation.
The handlebars are still scarred from the collision, but the impact is also emotional.
"Riding my bike to work is me-time," he said. "It's scary to think that, you know, there's a chance that this might impact me to the point where I'm actually scared to ride my bike."
Durbin says he had just started a new job and his health insurance has not kicked in yet, meaning he is liable for all of the medical bills.
But more than that, he wants to know who did this and raise awareness.
"It's common courtesy. If you hit somebody, or hit something, you stop to check," he said. "And it's just mind-blowing how somebody can hit someone and drive off."
