Beshear on Massie's defeat in Kentucky: 'It’s everything that's wrong with our politics'
Kentucky's governor is weighing in on the primary election day shocker that was watched around the country.
A relatively unknown newcomer, Ed Gallrein, dethroned 7-term Republican Congressman Thomas Massie on Tuesday in the most expensive House race in history.
Massie and Trump have been butting heads on major topics like the war, Epstein files and foreign aid. The president threw his full support behind Gallrein and ramped up attacks against Massie.
Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat with a very different political brand, took to social media on Thursday to share his thoughts on the outcome, particularly in regards to money:
"Thomas Massie and I don’t agree on much. But billionaires and special interest groups spent $35 million in Kentucky to unseat one conservative congressman — all because he stood up to Trump. It’s everything that's wrong with our politics today."
That figure refers to the total spent on both sides.
Here's a breakdown of spending from AdImpact from Monday:
- Pro-Ed Gallrein: $10.9M | Attacking Massie: $7.9M
- Pro-Thomas Massie: $7.6M | Attacking Gallrein: $6.2M
Massie has made these allegations that the race got so expensive because Washington "decided to buy" his seat.
According to AP, $9 million was pour into pro-Gallrein ads alone by pro-Israel groups.
WLKY is looking even deeper today into the ad spending, and the role Israel had in the race.
