11-year-old Norton Children’s patient spreads joy while fighting leukemia
DETAIL. THAT’S NEXT ON YOUR SEVEN DAY FORECAST. THANK YOU JAY. AN 11 YEAR OLD GIRL FIGHTING LEUKEMIA IS SHOWING EVERYONE AROUND HER WHAT STRENGTH AND GENEROSITY CAN LOOK LIKE. WHAT STARTED AS ONE SMALL IDEA HAS REALLY GROWN INTO MOMENTS OF JOY FOR FELLOW PATIENTS AND STAFF AT NORTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL. WLKY DEANDRIA TURNER HAS THIS STORY READY, WITH SPARKLING EARRINGS AND A SMILE THAT ARRIVES BEFORE SHE DOES. WHEN 11 YEAR OLD EMILY WILKINS ROLLS DOWN THE HALLS OF SEVEN WEST, PEOPLE KNOW ONE THING. IT’S GOING TO BE A GOOD TIME. NORTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL EMILY HAS BEEN FIGHTING LEUKEMIA SINCE FEBRUARY, BUT ASK PEOPLE AROUND HER AND THEY’LL TELL YOU SHE’S DOING MORE THAN JUST FIGHTING HER OWN BATTLE. SHE’S LIFTING OTHER SPIRITS. YOU’RE WELCOME. IT ALL STARTED WITH THIS SIGN IN HER HOSPITAL ROOM WINDOW. I WASN’T EXPECTING IT TO WORK, BUT IT DID. MORE THAN $3,000 HAS BEEN DONATED AND BUSINESSES HAVE PITCHED IN WITH FREE PIZZA AND DONUTS. WHAT STARTED AS ONE SMALL IDEA HAS TURNED INTO A BREAK FROM THE STRESS OF TREATMENT. THIS IS MY SECOND DONUT PARTY AND MY, I THINK, THIRD PIZZA PARTY. ON FRIDAY, EMILY HANDED OUT BOXES OF DONUTS FROM HER FAVORITE BAKERY BACK HOME IN BRANDENBURG. THESE ARE MY FAVORITES. AND HER FAVORITE FLAVOR. IF YOU’RE CURIOUS. I THINK MY FAVORITE WHENEVER I GET THEM IS PROBABLY THE CHOCOLATE AND SPRINKLES ONE. THAT’S HER FRIEND FINLEY SINGLETON, ENJOYING A BITE OF EACH DONUT. BUT SHE KNOWS THOSE TREATS ARE MORE THAN SUGAR. NOW SHE AND EMILY ARE WALKING THIS ROAD TOGETHER. EVEN THOUGH WE’RE GOING THROUGH SUCH A HARD TIME, WE CAN STILL FIND, LIKE, HAPPINESS. AND JUST LIKE JOY THAT. EMILY SAYS IS THE WHOLE POINT. SOME KIDS ARE GOING THROUGH A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN I AM, AND I JUST WANT TO HELP. WHEN EMILY BRINGS ISN’T JUST A TREAT, IT CHANGES THE ATMOSPHERE. SPECIAL EVENTS THAT PEOPLE LIKE EMILY LIKE TO DO CREATE SUCH A WONDERFUL AND HEALING ENVIRONMENT AND BUBBLE UP HERE. BECAUSE ON A FLOOR WHERE CHILDREN ARE FACING SOME OF LIFE’S HARDEST BATTLES, EMILY IS OFFERING SOMETHING JUST AS POWERFUL AS MEDICINE, A REASON TO SMILE. I FEEL REALLY GOOD BECAUSE I LOVE TO SEE WHENEVER PEOPLE OR OTHER PEOPLE ARE SMILING. DEANDRIA TURNER WLKY NEWS. AND TH

"It’s going to be a good time," said Madeline Klozik, a certified child life specialist.

What started with a sign in Emmalee’s hospital room window grew into something much bigger. More than $3,000 has been donated, and businesses have contributed free pizza and donuts for patients, families and staff.

"This is my second donut party and I think third pizza party," Emmalee said.

On Friday, she handed out boxes of donuts from her favorite bakery in her hometown of Brandenburg.

"These are my favorites. Here you go," Emmalee said.

Her favorite donut? Chocolate with sprinkles.

"I think my favorite one is chocolate and sprinkles one," she said.

Friends say the treats are about more than sweets. Emmalee’s friend, Finley Singleton, said her kindness is helping others find joy during difficult days.

"Even though we’re going through a hard time, we can still find happiness and joy," Finley said.

Emmalee said that is exactly why she keeps doing it.

"Some kids are going through a whole lot more than I am, and I just want to help," she said.

Hospital staff says her efforts have helped create a healing environment on the unit.

"The special events that people like Emmalee like to do create such a wonderful and healing environment and bubble up here," Klozik said. "Even on those hard days, you can find the love and joy and support in everyone."

For Emmalee, the goal is simple.

"I feel really good because I love to see other people smiling," she said.
