Rainy Memorial Day weekend weather prompts event changes in metro and southern Indiana
THAT. YOUR SUNDAY AND MEMORIAL DAY THAT’S COMING UP NEXT. ALL RIGHT. THANKS, JAY. THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND IS PACKED FULL OF EVENTS IN THE METRO AND SOUTHERN INDIANA, BUT THE RAIN COULD IMPACT THOSE PLANS. JAMIE MAYES TELLS US HOW ORGANIZERS ARE BRACING FOR THE WEATHER. THIS TIME OF YEAR, THE RED YETI IN JEFFERSONVILLE LOOKS FORWARD TO MORE CUSTOMERS COMING THROUGH THEIR DOORS. THERE ARE A LOT OF DAYS IN MAY THAT BUSINESS IS BOOMING, AND DURING ABBEY ROAD ON THE RIVER, THE WORLD’S LARGEST BEATLES INSPIRED FESTIVAL, THEY NORMALLY EXPECT TO SEE BIG CROWDS. BUT THE RESTAURANT’S MANAGER, CHRIS MEYER, SAYS RAIN HAS SLOWED DOWN BUSINESS SO FAR. THE WEATHER HAS TAKEN A LITTLE BIT OF THE USUAL BIG BOOM THAT WE SEE. ABBEY ROAD ON THE RIVER KICKED OFF THURSDAY AT JEFFERSONVILLE’S. BIG FOUR STATION PARK ORGANIZERS SAY THE FIVE DAY MUSIC FESTIVAL DRAWS ROUGHLY 10 TO 15,000 ATTENDEES, AND COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER WITH SOLON TOURISM SAYS WHILE FRIDAY’S TURNOUT DREW LESS OF A CROWD, LIKELY DUE TO WEATHER, THEY’RE STAYING HOPEFUL SATURDAY. SUNDAY IS WHEN WE REALLY SEE THE BIGGER UPTICK IN VISITORS COMING IN AND IN ATTENDEES COMING IN. WEATHER IS ALSO TOP OF MIND FOR OTHER EVENT ORGANIZERS, WITH BIG CHANGES TO HIKE, BIKE AND PADDLE AND BOARD, AND STAR VALLEY STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL DUE TO RISING RIVER LEVELS AND CHALLENGING CURRENTS, THE CITY OF LOUISVILLE IS CANCELING THE PADDLE PORTION OF THE MAYOR’S ANNUAL HIKE. BIKE AND PADDLE AT WATERFRONT PARK ON MONDAY, AND THE STAR VALLEY STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL IN BORDEN, INDIANA, IS CANCELED AFTER FLOODING AT BORDEN COMMUNITY PARK. THE BERRY RUN AND WALK FIVE K IS STILL ON FOR SATURDAY MORNING. ROSEANNE KROHN SAYS DESPITE THE SHOWERS THROUGHOUT THE DAY AT ABBEY ROAD ON THE RIVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NO CANCELLATIONS AT THEIR EVENTS. THE FESTIVAL HAS MADE A COUPLE OF TWEAKS TO THE SCHEDULE. SHE’S HOPING, EVEN WITH PUDDLES AND OVERCAST SKIES, PEOPLE WILL MAKE THE MOST OF THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. STILL COME OUT AND ENJOY. BRING YOUR RAIN GEAR AND HAVE A GOOD TIME.

“There are a lot of days in May that business is booming,” said Chris Meier, restaurant manager.

But this year, rain has cut into the usual festival bump.

“So far, the weather has taken a little bit of the usual big boom that we see,” Meier said.

Abbey Road on the River kicked off Thursday and runs for five days at Big Four Station Park in Jeffersonville. Organizers said the festival is expected to draw about 10,000 to 15,000 attendees.

Anna Rosales-Crone, communications manager with SoIN Tourism, said Friday’s turnout appeared lighter than usual, likely because of the weather, but organizers are optimistic that larger crowds will arrive later in the weekend.

“Saturday (to) Sunday is when we really see the bigger uptick in visitors coming in and in attendees coming in,” Rosales-Crone said.

The weather is also affecting other holiday weekend events.

Because of rising river levels and challenging currents, the city of Louisville has canceled the paddle portion of the Mayor’s annual Hike, Bike and Paddle event scheduled for Monday at Waterfront Park.

In Borden, Indiana, the Star Valley Strawberry Festival has been canceled after flooding at Borden Community Park. However, the Berry Run and Walk 5K is still scheduled for Saturday morning.

At Abbey Road on the River, Rosales-Crone said the festival has not been canceled despite the wet conditions, though some adjustments have been made.

“The festival has made a couple of tweaks to the schedule,” Rosales-Crone said.

Abbey Road on the River runs through Monday.
