Mother arrested for repeatedly hitting her child, according to police
A Louisville mother is under arrest after police say she was seen repeatedly hitting her child after leaving a gas station.
According to court documents, Louisville Metro Police were called out to the Thorntons on 7th Street Road after a woman was seen assaulting her 6-year-old child.
The mother, 40-year-old Noella Uwimana, told police that she was getting a coffee in the gas station when her child took and ate a candy bar without paying for it.
Uwimana was told by an employee that she would have to pay for the candy bar. She paid for the eaten candy bar, and she and her child went to their vehicle.
Court documents report that Uwimana admitted to hitting her child for stealing the candy, before she was stopped by witnesses in the area.
The incident was caught on video, in which police reportedly say Uwimana made a fist and began hitting the child, "with no hesitation or reduction in a blatant attempt to cause an impact on the victim sitting in the seat," according to court documents.
Also in the video, Uwimana was seen trying to leave the scene when a witness stopped her and let the child out of the car. Court documents say the child left the car and ran into the store for safety.
When talking to police, the child said that they were in the store with Uwimana and wanted to get candy, but Uwimana would not buy it for them. The child then said they went to the car and Uwimana came out and started hitting them.
According to the court documents, the child said Uwimana was gouging their face and was hitting them repeatedly, causing scratches to their face.
The child was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Uwimana was arrested and faces charges for first-degree assault-domestic violence, and first-degree criminal abuse of a child under 12.
She will be in court on Monday for arraignment.
