Stampede during Bike Fest near Myrtle Beach leaves 19 injured, officials say
Maury County Fire Rescue says crews responded to the stage area near South Ocean Boulevard in Atlantic Beach following reports of *** possible stampede. We have ring camera video showing the moments the crowd began moving. Crews say 19 people were hurt, with 3 taken to the hospital. Due to the amount of injuries, they are describing the incident as *** mass casualty event. Officials say others may have taken themselves to hospitals for treatment. There's still differing accounts about what exactly happened. There was just *** few people run probably *** block and stop and some people were getting out of the way. I think some people got scratched or something. It's not an issue. I mean, we had *** large crowd. Somebody spooked, run *** little bit, and that was it. Most of the people I spoke with said the same thing. They don't want this incident to take away from what they say has otherwise been *** successful event. While Bike Fest weekend has seen issues in the past, many say they continue coming back every year because of the atmosphere and festivities. One business owner who says he was less than 50 ft away from the incident, believes people are unfairly creating *** negative narrative. But everything was under control pretty much right away. I mean, everybody was having *** great time, so I think it was an isolated instance that certainly can't overshadow just this magnificent event that Myrtle Beach has put on. We've been coming for years, there's never any problems. The vendors are great, the people are amazing. We love it down here. We'll be back next year for sure. We received *** statement from the city of Atlanta Beach. It reads in part, at no time were there any confirmed fights, weapons, or direct threats to public safety. The situation appears to have been triggered with an individual begin running, causing *** brief chain reaction within the crowd that lasted only seconds. SE and SCDNR personnel responded immediately.
