In a league as competitive as the NWSL, games are often decided by the thinnest of margins.

On Saturday afternoon at Lynn Family Stadium, Racing Louisville FC found that out once again, falling for the first time at home this season by a 2-1 score to the North Carolina Courage.

Two transition moments by North Carolina did the hosts in — first, Swede Evelyn Ijeh inside 15 minutes, then Ashley Sanchez with the eventual winner just before the final 10 minutes. Captain Arin Wright pulled a goal back for Racing in stoppage time, but unfortunately, it was too late to fully rally.

“Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy,” said head coach Bev Yanez. “I don’t feel like a team broke us down. I don’t think that we should’ve been in the position to be 2-0 down. To then climb back, get that goal, amazing adversity, resilience.

“… I think it’s just, again, we keep speaking about it — it’s the finest margins right now. Unfortunately, put ourselves in a position to go 2-0 down. I also thought that the majority of the second half was spent in (North Carolina’s) half. Unfortunately, it’s a cruel sport, isn’t it? … So I just feel like those moments (the conceded goals) we caused a bit on our own.”

Racing (2-7-1, 7 points) has suffered each of its losses by a single goal. This defeat also snapped a six-game home unbeaten streak dating back to last season.

Racing did grow into Saturday’s game, out-shooting the visitors 17-11 while achieving significantly more final third entries: 62 to 39.

But Ijeh converted the Courage’s first of two goals on the counter Saturday in the 13th minute, wrapping a shot around Jordyn Bloomer for the opener.

Frustratingly, nine minutes later, Bloomer was forced off due to injury. She made way for Maddie Prohaska to make her NWSL debut between the Louisville sticks. Prohaska showed great confidence throughout in net, stepping in for the standout Bloomer as the hosts battled back into the match.

Sanchez capitalized on a transition again for NC’s decisive, 78th-minute goal. It was the forward’s seventh finish of the season through 10 games.

Racing did ask the Courage more questions in the second half. At a time, midway through the final period, more than 50% of the game’s action was played in the visitors’ defensive third across a 15-minute span. Louisville took 11 of its 17 shots in the last 45 minutes.

“For us, it’s just the details again,” vice captain Lauren Milliet said. “Obviously, they’re (the Courage) good in transition, good in tight spaces. … I don’t think besides those couple chances they had any other really quality chances. I think on the flip side for us, we had a couple really quality chances, and we didn’t finish them.”

The pressure paid off late when Katie O’Kane found Wright darting in for a header in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. It marked not only Wright’s first goal of 2026 but the club’s fifth goal in the final 15 minutes of play — more than any NWSL team this year.

“Really proud of the team for the energy we brought this game,” Wright said. “I think you could see we had most of the possession in their half of the field. We just have to be more clinical and just thoughtful about what we’re doing when we have the ball and not forcing it. … I think everyone gave the best they could. We’ve just got to start to get results.”

Racing wraps up play ahead of a month-plus summer hiatus next Friday at Lynn Family Stadium, as expansion side Denver Summit FC comes to town for the first time. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video.

The final match until July will serve as Pride Night. The first 2,000 fans will receive a complimentary Pride bandana, thanks to U.S. Bank. Postgame fireworks will follow the final whistle. For tickets and more information, visit RacingLouFC.com/pride/.

Makenna Morris is back in the Racing Louisville FC starting lineup as head coach Bev Yanez makes one tweak ahead of a 4 p.m. ET meeting with the North Carolina Courage at Lynn Family Stadium

The game will air nationally on ION as the opener of the network’s Saturday triple-header. Local radio coverage can be found on Sports Talk 790 AM.

Morris re-enters the Racing lineup with the club looking to extend its home unbeaten run to seven games, dating back to last season. She’ll slot in on the left wing, replacing the injured Ella Hase. The 23-year-old Hase misses out due to a hamstring injury suffered in last week’s 2-1 defeat at Utah Royals FC.

Beyond Morris’ return, the rest of the lineup remains the same from the Utah visit.

Forward Emma Sears will sit opposite Morris, on the right, going forward. In her career against the Courage, Sears has almost always produced up front, tallying four goals in five league games. Earlier this season, the Ohio State product assisted on Racing’s goal at North Carolina — one finished off by Sarah Weber.

After netting her second goal of the season last Sunday, Kayla Fischer keeps her place as Racing’s center forward. Fischer’s next goal would draw her even with her single-season career high (3).

Jordyn Bloomer anchors the Louisville defense between the sticks once again, making her 10th start of the campaign.

Captain Arin Wright and Courtney Petersen form the center back pair ahead of Bloomer, while club original Lauren Milliet and Quincy McMahon take up the fullback roles on the right and left, respectively.

Similar to the defense, the midfield is unchanged. It’ll again feature Taylor Flint, the NWSL’s interception leader (33), Macey Hodge and Katie O’Kane providing another threat in attack. Flint is the only Racing field player to play every minute of the campaign to date (810 minutes).

Six rookies headline the options off the bench, including University of Louisville goalkeeping product Erynn Floyd. She returns to the substitutes list for the first time since April 3.

Team sheet vs. North Carolina Courage

24 – Jordyn Bloomer
12 – Quincy McMahon
8 – Courtney Petersen
3 – Arin Wright (c)
2 – Lauren Milliet
26 – Taylor Flint
10 – Macey Hodge
20 – Katie O’Kane
4 – Makenna Morris
9 – Kayla Fischer
13 – Emma Sears

Available substitutes: 1 – Maddie Prohaska, 30 – Erynn Floyd; 11 – Taylor White, 15 – Mirann Gacioch, 16 – Maja Lardner, 19 – Avery Ciorbu, 21 – Rachel Hill, 23 – Macy Blackburn, 88 – Audrey McKeen

For Racing Louisville FC, there’s no place like home.

Racing has thrived at Lynn Family Stadium this season. To date, no team has beaten Louisville at home in 2026 — a feat only two other NWSL teams can stake claim to.

Saturday, head coach Bev Yanez and Racing will return to the fortress in Butchertown for the opening game of a two-match home slate against the North Carolina Courage. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET.

With the match being played on Memorial Day weekend — the “unofficial” start of summer — Saturday will serve as Summer Kickoff Day. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Hawaiian shirt, thanks to Stock Yards Bank & Trust. For tickets and more information regarding the game, visit RacingLouFC.com/summer/.

Louisville (2-6-1, 7 points) heads into this final pair of games before of an extended hiatus after an unkind opening nine-game stretch defined by significant time away from home soil.

Last week’s fixture — a 2-1 defeat away to Utah Royals FC — was the club’s sixth road match out of the nine total. Its three home games played so far are tied for the fewest in the NWSL, along with Denver Summit FC.

Fortunately, Louisville will finish this initial run of games at home on consecutive weekends. It has been some time since the fans departed Lynn Family Stadium disappointed.

Dating back to last season, Racing is riding a six-match unbeaten run on home soil. The last time the club lost in Louisville was 259 days ago versus Portland Thorns FC.

To maintain this form, Racing must overcome a side that it fell to on the league’s opening weekend by a 2-1 scoreline: North Carolina.

Mak Lind’s Courage (3-3-3, 12 points) find themselves just above the playoff line in eighth position early on in the campaign. Last week, the club picked up its most resounding result of the season: a 4-0 win over Chicago Stars FC in front of a sold-out First Horizon Stadium in Cary. All four tallies notably came in the second half.

Prior to last Saturday’s win, North Carolina had lost two straight by one-goal margins.

The Courage, though, lead the league in shots per game, putting pressure on opposing defenses.

Story Lines…

Goin’ Fisch(ing): In the defeat at Utah last Sunday, Racing’s opening goal to equalize the match in the second half was emblematic of its hard-working pressing identity. With the Royals attempting to play out of the back, the persistence of Macey Hodge created the scoring chance that Kayla Fischer, who made no mistake with a brilliant finish in the 68th minute. It was her second goal of 2026, just one off her single-season career high from last year.

Nope, not today: The momentum Jordyn Bloomer built up after taking charge of Louisville’s goalkeeping position last season has undoubtedly carried into this one. The Wisconsin product has consistently stood tall in net, recording essential saves to keep Racing in game after game. Per Opta, Bloomer has made 33 saves in nine starts, making her one of just four shot stoppers with at least 30 saves. In 2025, Bloomer finished with 80 stops, the third-highest tally in the NWSL.

Cashing em’ in: No team has been more efficient in front of the net at home this year than Racing. With eight goals in three matches at Lynn Family Stadium, Louisville’s 2.67 goals average per home game ranks at the top of the league. Overall, Racing has 14 goals in the opening nine games. That’s five more than at this point in 2025.

Recent series edge: Louisville has met North Carolina 12 times in regular-season play. While the Courage hold the historical lead (9-2-1), Racing is unbeaten across the last two matchups at Lynn Family Stadium. That includes a come-from-behind win in September 2024, a game in which Emma Sears converted the equalizer.

Final period threat: North Carolina has enjoyed offensive production in the second half of games. Nearly 70% of the club’s goals this year have come in the game’s final period (9 of 13). Of the teams that have played fewer than 10 games, the Courage’s nine second-half goals are the second most. In contrast, however, North Carolina’s four goals in the opening 45 minutes are tied for the second fewest in the NWSL this season. In fact, Saturday’s visitors haven’t scored a first-half goal in their last four contests.

Talk about red hot: When you talk about the most in-form players right now in the NWSL, Courage attacker Ashley Sanchez is right at the top of the list. Sanchez is flying out of the gates this year under the new coaching regime in North Carolina, recording six goals and one assist in nine starts. The six-goal tally is already tied for her career-high from 2023 when she was a member of the Washington Spirit. Sanchez picked up a goal and an assist in the convincing win over Chicago last week. She also converted both goals in the Courage’s victory over Racing back in March.

The LouCity & Racing Foundation and Hanger Clinic are teaming up once again to host Louisville Moves — a popular orthotic and prosthetic mobility workshop open to people with limb loss or limb difference, those who use orthotics or braces, or anyone else with physical challenges.

The event — entering its fourth year — will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at the LouCity & Racing Training Facility, 801 Edith Road. Registration is free, and those interested in attending can email louisvillemovesclinic@gmail.com to sign up today.

Hanger Clinic is the leading provider of orthotic and prosthetic care in the country, with seven clinics in the Louisville and Southern Indiana area, where they have served individuals with limb loss and limb difference in the community for more than 30 years. The event is designed to help attendees of all ages and abilities participate in adaptive athletic activities and achieve their mobility goals. Certified prosthetists and orthotists will be on hand to assist.

“This year’s event holds special significance as advocates across the state have been working as part of the So Everybody Can Move Initiative to increase access to activity-specific devices for Kentuckians with limb loss and limb difference,” said Michael L. McCauley, national clinical leader, pediatric care excellence at Hanger. “Staying active and connected to your community is fundamental to overall health and well-being, and we are truly honored to celebrate that with our attendees this year.”

The LouCity & Racing Foundation’s program manager, Adam Boren, will coordinate a mix of soccer and non-soccer activities during Louisville Moves.

“Louisville Moves has turned into one of our favorite annual events,” Boren said. “The LouCity & Racing Foundation’s goal is to make soccer — and all of the game’s health benefits — more accessible to our community. It’s a thrill to see all the smiles when a new group of people gets to play where the pros do.”

Located two miles east of Lynn Family Stadium, the LouCity & Racing Training Facility serves as the day-to-day home of Louisville’s professional soccer clubs and their front office staff. Wheelchair users attending Louisville Moves will be accommodated with preferred parking.

Louisville Moves participants will receive a complimentary ticket to a LouCity or Racing Louisville game.
