School board member adds to JCPS start time controversy with scathing letter
VANDERHOFF JOINS US WITH THE FALLOUT. MARK. YEAH. VICKI. RICK. MANY TEACHERS AND STAFF I SPOKE WITH SAY THEY DIDN’T WANT TO GO ON CAMERA BECAUSE THEY FEEL LIKE THEY’RE ALREADY IN HOT WATER. AND THAT’S BECAUSE THEY CAME TO TUESDAY’S SCHOOL BOARD MEETING AND SPOKE AGAINST THE NEW START TIME PLAN. IT WAS A RARE DISPLAY OF STAFF GOING ON THE RECORD AND OPENLY OPPOSING THEIR SUPERINTENDENT AND BOARD. THEY’RE REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT AS THEY SHOULD BE AND AS ALL AMERICANS ARE, THEIR NEXT PAYCHECK AND THAT FELT THREATENED BY KOLBE’S LETTER. MICHELLE PENIX IS A FORMER JCPS PRINCIPAL AND SAYS IT TOOK GUTS FOR TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS TO SPEAK AT TUESDAY’S SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, THE BOARD VOTED TO ADOPT ONE OF TWO SCENARIOS FOR NEW START TIMES, SOMETHING JEFFERSON COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER CHRIS KOLB AND OTHER BOARD MEMBERS STRUGGLED WITH. IT DOESN’T DO ANY GOOD TO PRETEND LIKE THERE’S SOME PERFECT SOLUTION OUT THERE. WHEN PEOPLE SAY, TAKE THE TIME TO GET THIS RIGHT, THERE IS NO GETTING IT RIGHT. THERE IS NO GETTING IT RIGHT. WE HAVE TO GET IT THE LEAST WRONG POSSIBLE. IN A LETTER DISTRIBUTED TO JCPS PRINCIPALS ON WEDNESDAY, KOLB EXPRESSED FRUSTRATION AND DISAPPOINTMENT WITH SOME STAFF, SAYING THEIR CRITICISMS HAVE BEEN UNINTENTIONALLY OR NOT MISLEADING AND ARE CONTRIBUTING TO A DAMAGING NARRATIVE ABOUT JSPS. IN CLOSING, KOLB WENT A STEP FURTHER, WRITING, IT MAY BE BEST FOR YOU AND FOR THE CHILDREN OF JEFFERSON COUNTY THAT YOU STEP ASIDE AND ALLOW SOMEONE TO LEAD WHO WILL EMBRACE THE OPPORTUNITIES THIS CRISIS PRESENTS. I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE THE MENTION OF A THREAT AS I TOOK IT THAT IF YOU COULD NOT GET IN LINE WITH US, THEN MAYBE YOU NEED TO LOOK AT OTHER OPTIONS. WLKY NEWS OBTAINED COPIES OF EMAILS, ONE IN WHICH KOLB ASKED POLIO TO SEND THE LETTER. TWO HOURS LATER, KOLB EMAILED AGAIN AND TOLD POLLIO HE DIDN’T HAVE TO SEND IT, BUT BY THEN POLIO HAD ALREADY DONE SO. ACCORDING TO A JC SPOKESPERSON, PENIX HAS CALLED FOR THE BOARD TO FIRE POLIO OVER THE BUS TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS. NOW. NOW SHE THINKS KOLB SHOULD RESIGN. ANYBODY WHO SAYS BASICALLY HOW WE INTERPRETED THE LETTER, YOU’RE ALL GOING TO GET THEM IN TROUBLE. UM, DON’T TALK. UM, IS UNACCEPTABLE. HE WORKS FOR US AND NOT FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT. NOW. I REACHED OUT TO KOLB AND ASKED HIM FOR AN INTERVIEW. HE TOLD ME, QUOTE, I’VE SAID ALL I HAVE TO SAY FOR NOW. THE NEXT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING IS

A Jefferson County school board member wrote a scathing letter to JCPS principals, accusing staff who criticized the start time plans recently adopted by the board of "misleading" statements that "are contributing to a damaging narrative about JCPS."Some even feel his letter included a threat meant to silence those critics."...It may be best for you and for the children of Jefferson County that you step aside and allow someone to lead who will embrace the opportunities that crisis presents," wrote Chris Kolb, a member of the Jefferson County Board of Education.>> READ THE FULL LETTER HEREKolb's comments were aimed at teachers and principals who spoke at Tuesday's board meeting, where a new start time plan was adopted that pushes some schools back to a 9:40 a.m. opening. Many of those who spoke say that's too late and will create a myriad of problems. Former JCPS principal Michelle Rennix says it took a lot of courage for those staff members to speak openly about their concerns, as it would for any employee to criticize their boss or their company's board of directors. That's why Kolb's suggestion they "step aside" could easily be construed as a threat, she said. "I think that is the part that principals found most offensive, honestly," she said. "You know, in this age, when we're fighting for bus drivers, for teachers and even for principals who are dedicated to our students, that was not a welcome response from him."For all the controversy over Kolb's letter, emails obtained by WLKY News show he changed his mind about sending the letter two hours after he asked JCPS Superintendent Marty Pollio to distribute it to principals."Actually, you don’t have to send it out," Kolb wrote to Pollio. "It probably puts you in a bad spot."By that time, Pollio had already sent Kolb's letter, according to a JCPS spokesperson.
