574 LMPD. A LOUISVILLE MOTHER ACCUSED OF REPEATEDLY HITTING HER CHILD IN FRONT OF WITNESSES AT A GAS STATION WENT BEFORE A JUDGE THIS MORNING. THE 40 YEAR OLD WOMAN WAS ARRESTED AT THE THORNTON’S ON SOUTH SEVENTH STREET, ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS. SHE TOLD POLICE THAT SHE WAS HITTING HER SIX YEAR OLD FOR STEALING A CANDY BAR. A WITNESS INTERVENED AND STOPPED THE WOMAN. THE INCIDENT WAS CAUGHT ON CAMERA. THE CHILD WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. THE WOMAN IS CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE

A Louisville mother accused of hitting her child at a gas station appeared in court Monday morning.Noella Uwimana, 40, allegedly hit her 6-year-old child at the Thorntons on 7th Street Road.Court records say the child took a candy bar and ate it without paying. Uwimana was told by an employee she would have to pay for the candy, to which she complied.Witnesses said they saw Uwimana hitting her child several times inside their vehicle outside the gas station. Police said the incident was also caught on surveillance video.The child was taken to the hospital.Uwimana is charged with first-degree assault (domestic violence) and first-degree criminal abuse of a child under 12.The judge kept Uwimana's bond at $75,000.
