Woman recounts aftermath of tree falling, killing cyclist in Iroquois Park
A tragedy unfolded at Iroquois Park on Saturday when a cyclist died following a tree falling near the golf course.
Carrie McKeehan said she was walking the trail around 7 p.m. when she noticed first responders gathered on Rundill Road. She said she then saw the aftermath of the incident.
“I actually saw the bicycle and the body under the tree,” McKeehan said. “There was nothing I could do but just pray for that person.”
Louisville Parks and Recreation provided a statement about the incident, saying in part, "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a tragic accident occurred in Iroquois Park yesterday evening, Saturday, May 23, at approximately 7:00 p.m. In the area near the golf course, a tree fell onto a cyclist, following prolonged rain and saturated soil conditions. Despite emergency response efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."
McKeehan said the tragedy is a reminder that something like this can happen to anyone.
She also shared her sympathy for those affected.
“I just hope that they find peace somehow through all this,” McKeehan said. “And that they don’t blame themselves or anyone.”
LMPD's Homicide Unit will conduct a death investigation.
