'We feel prepared': Emergency teams prepare for I-65 closure in Louisville
FORECAST IS NEXT. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU JAY. WELL, THE CLOSURE OF I-65 IN DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE WILL POSE SEVERAL ISSUES FOR DRIVERS AND ALSO FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIRECTORS AROUND THE AREA HAVE BEEN WORKING ON A PLAN FOR MONTHS NOW TO NAVIGATE ALL THOSE DETOURS. ADDIE MEINERS JOINS US NOW LIVE FROM DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE TO TELL US ALL ABOUT THE PLAN ADDIE. JENNIFER. RICK, THE PLAN FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES LIKE AMBULANCES AND FIRE TRUCKS IS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS FOR THE REST OF US. IT’S TO DOWNLOAD APPS LIKE WAZE OR GOOGLE MAPS TO NAVIGATE AROUND THE TRAFFIC. AND WHILE THERE ARE PLENTY OF DETOUR SIGNS POSTED AROUND THE CITY TO GET AROUND THIS SHUTDOWN, OFFICIALS SAY YOU SHOULD HAVE MORE THAN ONE WAY TO GET TO YOUR DESTINATION. WE’RE NOT REALLY PLAYING BY A DIFFERENT SET OF RULES THAN ANYONE ELSE, BECAUSE WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS I-65 IN ANY CAPACITY, INCLUDING EMERGENCY VEHICLES. AND BECAUSE OF THAT, KELLY JONES, THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF LOUISVILLE METRO EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, SAYS THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF PLANNING AND HOW TO NAVIGATE EMERGENCY VEHICLES THROUGH DOWNTOWN. THERE IS NO MAGIC FORMULA FOR FIRST RESPONDERS. THERE’S MITIGATION. THE POSTED DETOUR ROUTE FOR ALL VEHICLES IS TO TAKE I-264 AROUND THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE CITY, JONES SAYS. WELL, THAT’S FINE FOR NON-EMERGENCY VEHICLES OR PEOPLE PASSING THROUGH THE CITY. HE SUGGESTS TO USE APPS LIKE WAYS TO FIND THE FASTEST ROUTE TO A DESTINATION. IT SHOULD BE FEEDING THE REAL TIME DATA INTO THOSE MAPS TO HELP YOU GET WHERE YOU WANT TO GO. IN BULLITT COUNTY, WHERE AMBULANCES CARRY PATIENTS TO U OF L HOSPITAL REGULARLY, JOHN WATERS AND HIS BULLITT COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TEAM HAVE ALSO BEEN PREPARING. IT’S GOING TO BE A HUGE IMPACT. WE’RE GOING TO RELY ON LOCAL PARTNERS TO ASSIST US, AS WELL AS DAY TO DAY TO DAY, TAKING THE SIDE STREETS AND FIGURING OUT NEW ROUTES AS THE ENVIRONMENT CHANGES, WATERS SAYS. THEY, TOO, PLAN ON USING NAVIGATION APPS TO GET AROUND THE TRAFFIC, BUT ALSO UTILIZING U OF L HEALTH’S SOUTH CAMPUS IN BROOKS AND AIR FLIGHTS IN MAJOR EMERGENCIES. BUT WATERS SAYS SIMILAR TO METRO EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, IT WILL ALL DEPEND ON THE CHALLENGES OF THE DAY. DOING THE BEST WE CAN. YOU KNOW, IT’S A WE’VE HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO PREPARE. SO IT’S GOOD THAT WE’VE HAD THAT TIME TO PREPARE. JONES SAYS NAVIGATING THE CLOSURES WILL BE SOMETHING EVERYONE IS GOING TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH. AND ALTHOUGH HIS TEAM HAS A PLAN IN PLACE, THEY’RE READY TO TWEAK IT AS ISSUES ARISE. BUT WHAT HE’S ASKING OF ALL DRIVERS IS TO TRY TO BE AS PREPARED AS POSSIBLE. THERE ARE WAYS TO NAVIGATE THESE THINGS. THIS IS A STATE PROJECT THAT IS AFFECTING US LOCALLY. WE HAVE TO ADAPT TO IT TO HELP OUR CITIZENS THE BEST WAY WE KNOW HOW. YEAH. AND ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS THAT METRO EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT WANTS TO STRESS IS JUST TO BE PREPARED FOR THIS. SO YOU GOT LESS THAN TWO WEEKS. NOW HERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT YOU SHOULD DO. DOWNLOAD WAZE, GOOGLE MAPS, APPLE MAPS HOWEVER YOU WANT TO USE TO NAVIGATE AROUND THIS CLOSURE. GO AHEAD AND GET THAT DOWNLOADED TO YOUR PHONE. LEAVE YOURSELF SOME EXTRA TIME WHEN YOU ARE GETTING TO A DESTINATION, ESPECIALLY OVER THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS. WHILE WE’RE STILL GETTING USED TO THIS CLOSURE AND KNOW AT LEAST TWO ROUTES TO GET TO YOUR DESTINATION, AND ONE THING THAT IS IMPORTANT IF AN ISSUE ARISES AND YOU’RE SITTING IN TRAFFIC, BACKED UP ON A DETOUR ROUTE, DO NOT CALL 911 AND REPORT IT. YOU CAN CALL OR YOU CAN GO TO THE CENTRAL I-65 CENTRAL CORRIDOR PROJECT AND REPORT IT THERE. AND IF YOU WANT UPDATES, REGULAR UPDATES ON ANY CLOSURES WITH THIS PROJECT, YOU CAN SIGN UP FOR LENS ALERT. WE’LL HAVE MORE INFORMATION ON HOW YOU CAN DO THAT SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS PR

Emergency officials in Louisville and surrounding counties have been preparing for the closure of Interstate 65 in Downtown Louisville for months. Kelly Jones, deputy director of Louisville Metro Emergency Management, said first responders have no special route to take, and emergency vehicles will face the same restrictions as other drivers. "So we're not really playing by a different set of rules than anyone else. Because we will not be able to access our 65 in any capacity, including emergency vehicles," Jones said. The posted detour route for all vehicles directs traffic to I-264 around the western side of the city. While this route works for non-emergency vehicles or those passing through, Jones said first responders will use apps like Waze and Google Maps to find the fastest route through downtown. "It should be feeding the real-time data into those maps to help you get where you want to go," he said.In Bullitt County, where ambulances frequently transport patients to UofL Hospital, emergency management teams have also been preparing for the impact. Jon Waters, director of Bullitt County Emergency Management, said they, too, have a plan of action."We're going to rely on local partners to assist us as well as day to day, taking the side streets and figuring out new routes as the environment changes," Waters said. Waters noted that his team plans to use navigation apps to manage traffic but will also rely on UofL Health's south campus in Brooks and Air Methods flights for major emergencies. Jones said the biggest thing they need drivers to understand is to be prepared ahead of this closure. He recommends downloading navigation apps like Waze, Google Maps, or Apple Maps, leaving extra time for travel, knowing at least two routes to your destination, and signing up for alerts through the LENS I-65 system or downloading the Lou Ready app.To sign up for LENS alerts specific to the I-65 Central Corridor project, text i65 to 67283. Then you'll receive specific alerts that are related to the I-65 project and any detour routes. If you have comments or suggestions to detour routes, or would like to report issues, Jones said to not call 911, but instead to send a detailed message to info@i65centralcorridor.com.
